The whole album has a very live, personal feel to it - no doubt in part inspired by the phenomenal reactions Tom recieved to his rejuvenated live shows during 2003. (Parts of the album actually sound like live recordings, but not all is as it seems...)

It's definately a good album, Iambic 9 poetry is by far my favorite on it though

I have heard a couple of tracks but not the whole album. From reading and hearing a few interviews Squarepusher did(he doesn't do many), he is always vague about they way he works, live or premeditated. He is going to be playing downtown at the Showbox on the 13th. Sucks I can't go though.

I'm really not sure if it's live or not man...but i'm assuming that some are live and maybe some aren't live... not sure ;\  I might be going to atlanta to see him though so that should be super!

Some of it is indeedy live, from what I've heard. He's done a fair bit of live playing before, for example the funky stuff on Music is Rotted One Note. That album is awsome.

I need to get this album.

He drums live himself. He's a very talented drummer; plays all the funk/jazz stuff.

yes you do. the cover/booklet is awesome. the cover is just a mug shot of him, and the inside has a bunch of music-related mathematical equations and/or notes and shit

I did this review for local magazine, so here it is for your enjoyment (warning: kind of long)

A few crowd cheers (sampled to strange effect a number of times in this otherwise apparently studio album) presage the eruption of electronic madness that constitutes the first song, the title track of Ultravisitor, as a rollercoaster of frenzied beats spill from the speakers, and a intricate synth dances behind the wall of percussion, while somewhere a madman twiddles with EQ, reverb, and delay knobs. The 8 minute, 33 second song climaxes in waves of distorted noise, which drops into a brief and tense organ interlude, and ends with some nice and fat bass plucking.

At this point, particularly if you?re unfamiliar with the work of Squarepusher (the mind behind Squarepusher) you may be wondering: are you sure this is music? Sometimes, I?m not sure, but regardless, it?s damn interesting. Admittedly, certain portions of this album are quite difficult to listen to. A wall of white noise hides subtle harmonies with piano accompaniment on ?An Arched Pathway?, while ?Steinbolt? is a synth-guitar and breakbeat jam-fest washed in hissing distortion. On the other hand, the many tracks of the album are stunningly beautiful in ways that Squarepusher has never been before, with rich piano, guitar, and bass harmonies. There?s method to Jenkinson?s madness, and this shines through on most of the tracks.

Vocoded rants and poetry slams are sampled liberally, innocent sounds are gutted, turned inside out, and strewn across tracks, while freestyle electronic jazz fusion leapfrogs along. Sudden drops, time signature changes, reverbs building to a loud drone, and more esoteric musical meddling is undertaken with an apparently malevolent glee. Squarepusher draws from a profusion of musical styles and combines them into a contradictory sound: harsh at times yet beautiful, often chaotic yet calculated.

Squarepusher has been a groundbreaker in IDM (intelligent dance music) for over ten years, and this album is a huge step forward for the artist, while certainly being something that will never hit a rave near you. Jenkinson mastered the use of breakbeat percussion at breakneck speeds accompanied with bass noodling, and the unpredictable sampling of other instruments on seven earlier releases, among them Go Plastic and Feed Me Weird Things, and has been copied by drum n? bass artists ever since. Rather than retread the more than ample ground he has already staked out, he creates a new space of genre-bending music all his own. This album certainly shows the time and dedication the artist has put into it over the last three years; it is more concentrated and well-crafted than previous efforts, and even the distortion and noise is shaped in a meticulous manner.

If you?ve got an open mind and like to hear a much more interesting side of the electronic sound than you?ll hear in the bland, repetitive offerings of any dance hall, do pick up this album. Just don?t expect to make peace with the album in the first five, ten, or more hearings. Ultravisitor is a wild ride through the confusing space of Tom Jenkinson?s mind, and though occasionally painful on the ears, it is by parts astounding, entertaining, confusing, and enriching.

I give it 9 out of 10.

Yeah, Tetra-Sync is on Ultravisitor, and it is indeed fucking sick.

I get shivers down my spine from the bassline in that one. Crazy crazy music.

He also did a live set for Breezeblock (on BBC radio) recently, with lots of unreleased material. Excellent and very different from Ultravisitor. I think I downloaded it from the BBC pages, but can't find it there right now. Should be possible to get it on Soulseek (Squarepusher - BBC-Breezeblock-03/15/04-(Set)).

ya know, the more i listen to that album, the less i like it.

of course there are a few songs that are really, really good, and the album as a whole is amazing technically..its obvious that squarepusher is exceedingly talented at both programming and playing bass, but still, i wish the album had more *music* and less farting around on bass/making chaotic noise.

dont get me wrong, i like hearing him play bass, and i definitely like my share of chaotic noise in electronic music, but i think both were a little overdone in this case.

I like this album much better than other stuff I've heard fom Squarepusher. I've got I think 2 other albums, and none have the musicality and soul that this one has. They were all much more randomly chaotic, almost sounding auto-written by a computer.

Great review, Tinman, you should get a job with AMG

I'm so glad people actually listen to good music on here(for the most part I.E. slipknot lmao) iambic 9 poetry is what got me into mushrooms, its a weird story involving dreams and nonsense like that, but all built up to the beauty of mushrooms.
