New plate looks pretty good, but I would definitely go back to germ plate and get 5 or 6 more transfers to new plates

Alright guys, finally time to do this. I have the lc ready, but no idea what container to use.

Any ideas? All I have is 1/4 pint jars, or syringes without caps.

What % of nutrition in your mix? Across the board it just looks like a minor media resource imbalance of some kind but honestly not too bad.

This was just a phenomenon I noticed pulling cultures from cold storage over time so I started employing the occurrence on purpose to help with my own goals.

These are just my crazy thoughts so take it as you will. Grain of salt and all that. :laugh2:

These plates are 10g agar which I usually dial back a little bit
And 9g potato flakes to 500ml

They came from lme, I don't remember the recipe but I usually run it at 7g for 500ml

Nothing else.

I'll definitely try an lc in cold storage. Should I let it grow out a little before the fridge or put it in there right after I make it?

It'll give me the time to wait for real plates to come in and work the other cultures on some no pours

Fully mature LC. Teaming with metabolites, and all the nutrition stored up in tissue is best.

No GE for cold storage. Try to leave as small of a bubble as possible so the oxygen gets used up and is not an inspirational factor for metabolic processes. leaving the bottled LC to sit at room temp for a couple days before the cold storage helps to use up the remaining oxygen. The goal is to slow metabolism to a near halt so they enter an induced meditative state. Light, heat, oxygen, and nutrition are the factors to limit, nutrition being limited in the form of already having been consumed. In a distractionless space they have the room for thought, self reflection, and self evaluation. They come out a bit changed and more mature.

Just going from LC to agar alone will often break a tricky culture. I'd also suggest plating some at the time of bottling. You may see enough of a break at that point to reach your goals without waiting for the culture in cold storage to figure it out. Out of the cold they break more but you don't always need to go that far. These types of methods require some creative thinking and good intuition on behalf of the cultivator but these types of methods also give rise to more opportunity for observation of behavior.

I wish I had better terminology but I don't so I use terms like "meditative state" because that is the most similar term I know of, that commonly I think others can relate to, to describe what I am trying to convey...

Please let me know how this goes for you so I can expand my understanding as well.

If you got the plates to spare you can take another T1 but I have a hunch if you took the transfer where the gap was on the first plate it will probably look pretty damn good when you let it grow out.

That is where I took the transfer from. And at the time, it was the only candidate sector. However, there was also that wispy mold in close proximity.

Is bacterial contamination on agar usually obvious? I've made around 25 plates so far and I've lost 1 to mold, every other plate has been fully taken over by white myc.

Does that mean that my technique is somewhat decent, or could I have just easily missed bacterial contamination hiding somewhere?

Yes, bacteria looks like snot. Usually hard to miss. IME, mold is the sneaky one.

Got agar pics?

That's good to know, thanks. Here are a few recent ones:

Transfer 3, I used this to inoculate spawn:

Transfer 1:

They don't look obviously contaminated. So I would say your tek is good. What happened when it went to grain/bulk?

Nothing too bad happened, this was my first time working with grain spawn and I accidentally stalled out my jars with poor gas exchange, but it's fruiting now and I'm about to get my first flush

The reason I asked is because I want to experiment with liquid inoculant for my next batch and I was pondering whether I might've missed something on my agar plates because I honestly expected to lose more of them as a beginner. You've given me enough confidence to at least give it a try, and if it doesn't pan out, at least I'll know that I have a problem to fix. Thank you!

Right on, then you are winning. Your agar game is pretty good if you got this far. There are a couple suspicious areas, but see how it develops. How long did it take from spawn-to-bulk, til now? Are they getting light? Air exchange?

So, it's been 17 days so far, I spawned my jars on 7th (1:2) and the surface started getting covered with pins on 22nd.

I realized that many areas of this photo have a vague greenish hue but it's just the lighting and an old smartphone camera.

They get plenty of ambient light but I haven't increased FAE yet because the air here is very dry and I didn't want to risk drying out the substrate. They get some FAE through the lid that doesn't fit snugly, and I fan them twice a day. I'm waiting for the pinset to fill out before I flip the lid and really ramp up FAE, in around 2-3 days or so? Surface conditions seem fine too, there are still a few tiny beads of water on the surface from my last misting a few days ago. I'm very optimistic at this point

Don’t fan, mist until it’s covered in tiny beads but not pooling, and then don’t touch it. There is no reason to fan your grow twice a day. Your surface is hella dry.

Wait, really? There are still those tiny beads of water sitting on the substrate, though pins have slurped up a lot of it in the past day or so. Here's a better quality photo:

Either way, stop fanning it's only counter productive and does more harm than good

Your pins aren’t drinking the water, you’re fanning it away. You want the whole thing to have thousands of little beads of water on it.

Whoops, I'll give them a mist and stop fanning then. Thank you both

x-poxt from plins thread. Because...

I love lions mane on agar.
