Here's what's in the stuff I use:
Quote:
WATER, SUGAR, FD&C YELLOW #5, FD&C BLUE #1, PROPYLENE GLYCOL, FD&C RED #40, FD&C YELLOW #6, FOOD STARCH-MODIFIED (CORN), FD&C RED #3, CITRIC ACID, XANTHAN GUM, SODIUM BENZOATE (PRESERVATIVE), POTASSIUM SORBATE (PRESERVATIVE).
water then sugar then colors (basically)

@SD Myc doesn't only grow on the surface of agar.
I have Phoenix Oyster on 1.5/2%MEA. When I transfer, I see fluff growing from all sides of the wedge in a matter of hours? Seems to me to be growing inside the agar.
Also, the nutrition has impact on the type and speed of growth. I usually use 2% for both agar and LME. I've been experimenting with 1.5% LME and myc covers more ground. The general asumption in here seems to be that it is 'seeking' nutrient, so grows faster. Definitely less 'fluffy.'
@MB, many synthetic food colourings are made using benzene as a base. hydrocarbon, carbohydrate, both sound similar, and both store energy. some ‘natural’ colours are made from caramelised sugar, generally the ‘caramel’ colours.

I'm seeing conflicting answers to the following question and seek clarification brothers: Should I get vented or non-vented petris? Or does it not really matter?
Also, where are you people with the magic links to petri's for $60/case? everything on ebay is like 120 right now
Was very pleased with my first sleeve the other day, I'm really gonna get crackin once I get my case

Personal preference I think. If you wrap your plates then it doesn't really matter. Vented dishes will dry out faster if you don't wrap them. Non vented will last a couple of months without wrapping. I hate wrapping plates, so I like the non vented. The downside is that they tend to be more expensive and harder to find. I'm having a hell of a time finding a good source for them right now and I'm down to my last 8 dishes, oh the horror.

Personally, I ALWAYS wrap petri's or I see edge contamination (or worse).
They need GE, and that requires a barrier unless storing (and viewing) plates in front of an active flow hood, or in a SAB.
I use Glass petri, that aren't 'vented', just irregular enough to allow adequate GE, and the don't dry out for 3-5 months.

Small spot of Ecuadorian myc I took from a MS inoculated jar. Can't wait to see this pop off over the next few days. 8g agar to 400ml oat boil water.

Anyone ever see this before? Dish 4 of 1st round of transfers from a GT clone tissue myc dish transfered on 5/13. This is on LMEA. It is two raised ridges in/on the agar. As you can see the two separate ridges look like a y. I did not put it there nor was it there when I slid the wedge in. Freaky!

Need some help please with figuring out what are the best parts to transfer... Some are for previous dish pins that I placed in these dishes and some are transfers from previous dishes

Water droplet that moved around as you were rotating the plate looking at it?

No I don't think so. The plate is fairly dry and those ridges are solid in the agar. I didn't move the dish around much when I inoculated it either.

You'd have to be pretty good to do that on purpose with water drops. . .
