True Natalensis trying to get cleaned up from T0 got a little bacterial. Hoping it can be saved with a T2



This is supposed to be HVC. Never done this one before, but it looks weird to me. Myc is very brown and a little agressive, but not trich or cobweb type agressive. Anyone seen this with Subtropicalis before?

Am I going to be the first to do Instant Ramen agar?

Ran out of my gnocchi plates, but tonights dinner (tofu)  doesn't call for that. It will pair very nicely with these indonesian ramen noodles I got at the dollar store (BEST RAMEN I'VE HAD).

For these, you drain them then add the oils and spices inside. The water is quite starchy, and I am going to make my next batch of plates with it as opposed to my Gnocchi recipe.

I'm assuming you've been transferring from areas that don't have the contam.

If this is the case, it could be travelling in the agar wedge (assuming all other sterile procedures are dialed in).

I increased the time I pc my agar and I now vented prior (I use an Instant Pot). If it's happening on every plate, I'd be looking at this part too.

I considered trenching but instead i've been using a pair of fine point tweezers to grab bits of myc without transferring agar. Not my idea. One thing that's really important is to let them cool down fully after flaming as the heat makes the myc stick to them, ruining the transfer.

I've not had it on all plates, if I had, I'd consider all potential vectors in my sterile technique.

Yes everything's been done to a tee. using a ffu and what not.

Yeah i have had some plates do it and even after x amount of transfers itll follow. Im doing to try doing both methods if i have this happen again. Its a PITA cause you do everything right for so long then you have this different stuff. I thought i was the only one. Another member said the same things. Those pics are old and have been tossed.

Is sooner better than later trenching/tweezer pulling ? Or can i make a trench then stick my transfer in ?

But yeah, I did a sunny side up fried eggs to go with it, and got it perfectly yolky. It was a MSG mindgasm and new lazy staple

Pretty sure that’s just your mycelium reaching out. It’s normal.

This stuff goes far out and usually the mycelium will stop and that film will keep going. I gotta do something for next time so i do fudge it up. Those were old plates but i got new gear and trying to avoid this happening and not working out

The sandwich bag from the fp+ scallop culture is done.. looks pretty typical of this culture.. maybe a little more snaggletooth than usual but that’s hard to say with these lol


You can see how early I took the transfer tho.. maybe it just hadn’t spread to that part of the culture yet. :shrug:



Took a bigger transfer off the scallop CS plate and put it to its own plate.  I’m expecting it to be clean but we shall see

Hello all. Getting back into agar after a long hiatus. Re-learned some valuable lessons regarding pour temperature (first poured too hot ended up with much condensation). Then, because the temperature is generally cool, I had the bright idea of using a seed mat to keep them at temp. However, within just a couple hours it evaporated water from the agar and condensed it on the lid. SMDH

Anyway I think there was enough to make some transfers, can you give me some thoughts on these?

Tomentose but that's looking good I think!

You can try stacking the plates, helps with condensation. But with time they go away.

I have a question: got really excited to do Ramen agar, I drained the boil water, it is very starchy. But it is also oily, probably from palm oil in the noodles.

Think those would be detrimental to the mycelium, or fair game?

I could maybe try skimming fat from the top, since it was in the fridge overnight.

Or use a syringe, pipette or turkey baster to collect the starchy water from below the oil. I can't imagine that the oil will be very helpful.
