Hey folks,
I'm putting my lab area back together after a 2 year break and I'm looking at my tiny 12x12 flow hood with a bit of dread in having to work in such a small area. I did it before, and although it was a major PITA it worked out ok anyway. Now I'm wondering if I should spring for a larger filter and build a new hood.
Do any of you guys use a 12x12 FH for agar work?
I live in a remote area outside of the continental US so shipping costs are insane and a new filter would probably cost more to ship here than the cost of the filter itself.
Any suggestions?
Thanks, I can't wait to start posting some plate pics.

Take the pic at an angle so you dont get the reflection. Directly overhead gives you flash reflections or the outline of your phone.

How do you guys get rid of condensation??  I just poured my first plates the other day and it seems like no matter what I do a couple always have it.

I flip mine upside down and poke a couple holes in the parafilm to let it escape. Iv had the same issue ever since i started pouring plates, even when the agar is cool, under 110°f it still condensates on the lid.

The optimal pour temp is 117F. Stacking the plates while cooling will assist in preventing condensation on the plates being covered. However the top (and sometimes bottom) plate(s) usually wind up fucked. After 2wks of sitting wrapped in my desk drawer they ususally clear up.

I always put a cup of warm water on top of the stack while they set... never have any condensation that way.

I just pour ahead of time, usually dissipates prior to use

yep, stack plates higher so you have fewer top and bottom plates, basically. setting something warm over those plates will clear them up too if you need the plate and it's bothering you.

Never understood the big issue muself...  I mean, "visibility" meh... its water... "spreads infection"... shouldn't be there to start with lol... lower temps, higher stacks, pouring ahead, even pouring in an overheated space so it doesn't cool too quickly...

Iv tried stacking plates with a heat mat under my sab and the top 4 or so plates always no matter what have condensate on them. It does usually go away if i leave them for a few days, but flipping them after inoculation keeps mine pretty clear.

I've been struggling with this, too, I think the best thing is light and lots of it--lately I've been getting the best results by placing the plate on a flat surface of a contrasting color (like, dark compared to the white mycelium) directly in front of a window with daylight coming through. Then I turn on every light in the room, and shine my grow light on the plate, too. For plates with condensation issues, I've also been having some luck with shining the grow light at the plate from the side at a low angle. I think the light coming in through the side of the petri dish is what makes it turn out better. The first plate below had really bad condensation, but by shining the light from the side I could get an OKAY photo. The condensation really cleared up by the time I took the second picture, which is a lot nicer (satellite contamination still a problem, tho).

EDIT: Oh, and as others have noted, if you're using your phone try taking the photo from further away (18-24 inches?) and then crop. A lot easier to get good focus.

These are my first ever plates, from three days ago. I can’t believe how fast they grow.
I took pics from the back cuz there’s so much condensation so they’re kinda blurry.

I took two samples each from two fruits, the goal is to try to get one of those crazy canopies. So how long do I wait to start taking transfers, and where do I go from here??

They’re looking good!  Anytime really but I’d let them grow another day or two and take early transfers.  Middle left is lookin fine   middle right

Best I've found is with an external flash, if you happen to have one lying around. Point it towards the ceiling & shoot directly over dish. If there's a reflection, swivel the flash a bit & try again.

How are you storing those to keep them looking so good?  I rarely feel comfortable using them directly out of the fridge because of all the condensation.

I think they havent been in the fridge yet, I cold store plates in the fridge upsidedown, in a plastic bag that's not sealed up. I do this so if there is crazy condensation or pooling, its not drowning the culture. And if something does get flooded, it doesnt always mean the culture is fucked.

Gotcha.  They are usually fine with water in there.  But I take a transfer to see.  Would rather be able to put good looking plates in the fridge and pull them out later to go directly to grain.

Correct these havent been in the fridge yet. I keep them stacked in a gallon ziplock not completely sealed.its a small wine fridge with a lot of air movement so I think that helps keep condensation down.

Hei guys!

Made some clones from cluster and getting strange growth? Any tips what the hell is going on?

Looks like nice mycelium growth inside, and this special ring of weak or wtf growth

Thanks, Tony
