Iowa Questions
    #2566081 - 04/16/04 12:22 AM (13 years, 17 days ago)

I live out here in the middle of Iowa. I live near a large city, but the town I'm in is relatively small. On the outskirts you can find cow pastures and such... I'm assuming that I will be able to find psychoactive mushrooms in Iowa, correct? I checked the list for what mushrooms grow in what state, but I didn't see Iowa on the list at all.

Also, in the woods nearby, there is an area that they cut up a bunch of trees into woodchips. I think they're making space for future home developments... Anyway, what kind of mushrooms would grow on woodchips? I looked around the other day and I didn't see any. When can I expect them to grow?

Thanks in advance for any insight on the subject.

It helps to read the foreword:

Throughout the United States and Canada the species Panaeolus subbalteatus grows. Rather than create entries for states and provinces which would then have nothing else listed, it is probably a good assumption that this mushroom grows in those states and provinces not listed. Similarly, if it is not listed for a state or province, mentally add it.

Also you may find Pn subbs in Iowa but most people never find an abundance or enough to get high. IT takes a fresh ounce or more or about 4-5 dried grams.

The mushroom is cosmopolitan but not in abundance except in rare instances when the conditions are right.

Only about five of us here at the shroomery have seen monsterous fruitings of this species.

Mitchnast in Nova Scotia, pasture only.

Joshua in Corvalis who found a lawn of them (extremely rare but it was abundant).

GGreatOne234 in Florida from pastures.

ME in Corvalis by dozens of pounds from haystacks and from pasture on Maui at the 32oo meter level of Haleaakala,

and Angry Shroom who scored one of the most beautiful collections of abundant subbs ever in a large monsterous compost heap in Northern California.

And that is a twety-five year list. Oh yes, lest not forget the

Lizard King. He has found them in Georgia in manure.

and good luck.

Pictures are posted in the Ultimate Shroom Guide here at the Shroomery.
