What the **** is this??
    #2565336 - 04/15/04 08:58 PM (12 years, 7 months ago)

Sorry- I previously posted on the wrong thread: found this floating in some stagnant water in the bush: it's about 2ft long and over 3inches in diameter- and it's obviously part of a larger organism. I'd swear it's a tree branch, but the skin is rubbery and internally it's definitely spongelike- and there's this pattern on it. I've also found evidence of some animal eating it before I found it....maybe it's obvious to someone on this site- but I have no idea. BTW- I'm in the southern Georgian Bay area of Canada. Thanks all! Cheers- P [image][/image] [image][/image] [image][/image] [image][/image]

How about a cross section of it. Is it pliable?

Until you offer more info, I still think it is the branch to a Monkey Puzzle tree. The ocean can often change the texture and consistancy of things.

Its one of those water finding sticks oldtimers use to use to divine water in the deserts.

Joshua- don't think we have monkey puzzle trees here in Southern Ontario....and we don't have any oceans either- I found it floating in some water in the forest.
Just sliced a piece off- it's definitely not a tree- the skin is tough, difficult to bend, the inside is solid white (reminds me of a giant puffball!)....wish I knew my fungus terminology better- but "spongelike" is the best adjective, but very small and fine pores.

Does anyone have access to a Monkey Puzzle tree? If so could you take pics of a branch with its needles stripped off?

I'll go check this suspicious root out over here, even though it's dark out, there's a full moon, and there has been a rash of root-related strangulations lately.

It's tempting- but this is not wood- it's not even rotting wood...and I can't imagine how a monkey-puzzle tree could grow in the middle of a forest which I am very familiar with. Not to mention the fact the tree is not native to this area....not to mention something was eating it before I found it....not to mention the fact it's starting to really acquire an interesting aroma....."eau de swamp", I believe it is...

You are familiar with the plant life in your area and should have a much better idea of what it is than any of us. Go back there and look around, the answer is probably nearby. Is the water you found it in a puddle in the middle of the forest or a larger body of water?
