Jars stopped colonizing, vegetable steamer drying jars?
    #2565279 - 04/15/04 08:46 PM (12 years, 7 months ago)

I used a vegetable steamer to sterilize the jars with the mix in there...this round they got 3/4 through their cycle and then stopped (no growth in at least 10 days). I assume the substrate got too dry adn would like to avoid this next cycle. Now, 1) Can I still use my vegetable steamer next cycle (it's so efficient and easy) 2) If so, how long should I leave them in there/what advice can be said about avoiding dessication. Add extra water to the mix? Thanks everybody.

I kinda doubt that they were dried out as a result of steamin them. I say this because the air inside the steamer should already be so saturated with water vapor that it would seem impossible for it to dessicate the substrate in the jars.
Did you turn the jars upside down to facilitate good air exchange?
Was the environment in which they were incubated excessively dry?

I'm certainly no expert, but gas exchange was my first thought too.

what is your substrate? it sounds like you are using WBS. if you are try simmering the WBS in water for about 30 mins to ensure they are fully saturated, then steam them. if that doesn't work, try using a differnt filter on your jars or drilling a bigger/more holes in the lids or turning the jars upside down in your incubator. dont use tape on the lids, it slows down growth in my experience.

Go to the post office and get a tyvek envelope. They are free. Cut small squares and tape them over the holes so that there can be air exchange.

now that you mention gas exchange I still have tape over the holes of the jars...I'm working with RBF in 1/2 pint jars, glad to know the vegetable steamer is a good way of sterilizing...I guess the only way to find out is to do it but by removing this tape you think it will resume growth even after stalling for 10 days?...

If you're using any grains, you need a pc (endospores...)

Do a search for polyfill filters (very easy, cheap and effective).
