Planning a trip here next May/June. Doesn’t necessarily have to be in either park. The surrounding John Muir Wilderness and the National Forests.
Is anyone familiar with this part of California?

Planned a trip there several years ago - in May as well - and got snowed out. Definitely still on my bucket list though.

I live right at the base of Kings Canyon and Sequoia is like 45 mins away
Great places to backpack! Just got back from emerald lake along lakes trail in Sequoia in November and it's been one of my favorite spots. Very temperate weather and beautiful trails and views.
Possible dangers are black bears, bucks, rattlesnakes, and cougars. I only ever really worry about cougars. Super rare but people get freaking sniped by cougars on trails occasionally, so I always carry mace and a tomahawk on my belt.
Be very aware of your hydration. The air is extremely dry and zaps water from you faster than you'd think.
I haven't spent much time in the wilderness areas but as far as I know there are a ton of hidden lakes in John Muir. The Sequoias, if you haven't seen them yet, are stunning. Absolutely mammoth trees and to see them together in groves makes you feel like you're in a fairy tale. I highly recommend taking time to appreciate them.
Other places I really liked were jennie lake on the jennie lakes trail loop in sequoia and dinkey lakes loop in kings canyon.
I hope you have a blast these mountains are beautiful. I've picked emerald lake as a spot I'd like to return to and experience on shrooms

Nice dude. Good info and great pics!
Right now we’re looking at doing a loop using the twin lakes trail which is very close to what you mentioned above. We would hike over skillmans pass and there are a ton of alpine lakes on the other side.
We’re looking to do this as early in the year as possible but a lot of it will depend on how much snowfall you guys get this winter and spring.
If it’s ok with you I’ll probably PM you before we submit for our wilderness permits to check in with how much snow is still on the ground.

No problem! I'll be back up there asap, maybe as soon as February/March weather permitting (and shutdown permitting). As far as I've heard this year is looking to be fairly dry.

Things are not looking good. Might need to push back the trip.
We’re even looking at a plan B in emigrant wilderness because the roads to the Rowell meadow trailhead could be closed until July if this snow pace keeps up.

I think it's over 350" in most places at the moment. And it's WELL above it's normal average for this time of year. Like 150%. And it's already roughly 130% over normal April 1st levels with a lot of snow in the future according to long forecasts.
A lot of people are expecting it to push 500" for the season when it's all said and done

What’s up man. How are things looking between 8-10k feet right now? We’re about 30 days out for the trip.
