Different effects between species?
    #25652204 -

Hi! I'm fairly new to shrooms and have only taken P. semilanceata about 4-5 times as they are the only ones that grow where i live.

I have always enjoyed them a lot more than acid, mostly because I have been able to trip harder without becoming as disoriented as I get on higher doses of acid.

Now to the subject.. I recently got ahold of some P. ovoideocystidiata which are said to be about two times stronger than cubensis, i tried 1.25g and tripped very hard but what surprised me was that it reminded me more of acid and the visuals hadn't nearly the same depth as my semilanceata-trips had, even at lower doses. Also my girlfriend agreed with me on this.

Have any of you felt differences between species except the potency?

Each species has a unique alkaloid profile, or alkaloid ratio, leading to little different effects.

There is psilocybin, psilocin, and (nor-)baeocystin present in mushrooms.

P.semilanceata has a lot psylocybin (~1.2%), almost no psilocin (0.02%), and some baeocystin (~0.4%).
P.cubensis has almost equal ammounts of psilocybin and psilocin (both around 0.5%), but almost no baeocystin (0.02%).

Theoretically, the psilocybin is converted into psilocin in our body, and beaocystin is reported to feel similar to psilocybin, too. But many people feel distinct differences between certrain species.
Some say it's placebo, but it may be connected to the different alkaloid ratios. Metabolizing psilocybin into psilocin activates certain enzymes that might interact with or alter the effects.
It's not proven yet, sadly those interesting compounds have been banned a long time ago. No proper reseach is done today.

Given that psilocin degrades way faster than psilocybin, some, if not most of the psilocin present in fresh shrooms degrades while drying.
Dried P.semilanceata is therefore almost twice as potent as dried P.cubensis. And fresh P.cubensis is more potent than dried ones.

P.semilanceata is said to be very visual and "clean", compared to cubensis. The same is said about Pan.cyanescens btw, especially fresh ones.

I have only tried cubensis so far. Never tried those "ovoids" you mentioned, though, and know nothing about their alkaloid ratio..

That would make a lot of sense!

I will very soon be taking P. azurescens for the first time so it's going to be really interesting to see if they'll be any different from the other two.

I can give an update after the trip if you or anyone is interested

There are subtle differences but they amount to the same basic experience.
Kinda like whiskey some make people mean and another type will make the same person all goofy but in the end your getting drunk.

I have tried about 6 different cubensis and they all felt pretty much the same but when I used to take wild Psilocybe cyanescens my eyes would always water and my nose would run and I laughed a lot more as where cubensis always feel deeper and more mind fuckey.

I think different species have different effects. It's not just their different potencies and chemical profiles, but the "vessel" by which the chemicals are delivered also have different makeups. They even smell distinctly different.

I've tried 4 species so far: Cubensis, Panaeolus Cyanescens, Panaeolus Bisporus, and Psilocybe Galindoi sclerotia.

The following is just my experience, take it with a grain of salt as there are always many factors/variables with this sort of thing:

Cubensis - seems to have a higher rate of entity contact on high doses, but this might be because they were my first and I did them a lot with very high doses as my first mushroom. I don't get as much entity contact nowadays, who knows what the reason is? Also seems to have a higher rate of harsh trips.

Panaeolus Cyanescens - Seems to give the best overall experience, and a feeling of something truly divine. An absolute fit of love and joy at the beauty of existence. Fairly easy to puke usually, which is a plus, but I've had some rough nausea before. Extremely intense open eye visuals, but so far closed eye visuals aren't as intense in propotion to the OEVs.

Panaeolus Bisporus - Like Pan Cyans, but kick in stronger in a distinct, emphatic way. It's like a switch is flipped and you're filled gradually but fairly quickly with a flood of love. Seems to give much harsher nausea than anything else I've tried, and is harder to puke than the rest, to the point of failure and having to ride out that horrible pain. I cannot emphasize how painful this shit is. Very intense OEVs and especially CEVs.

Galindoi/ATL #7 sclerotia - Seems to take longer than mushrooms to kick in, even at high doses. Has given me the most intense fit of love I've ever had so far, but that just might be due to the absolutely monstrous dose I took (115g of fresh sclerotia, about as newly formed as you can get). Also gives horrible nausea that has so far been incredibly hard to purge and seriously made me consider quitting this hobby. CEVs are somewhat dull considering the intensity of a trip, and OEVs, while intense, are also strangely "blunted."

I've just gotten better at puking today with a new technique, so hopefully I can truly purge my next trip. (The technique is: while having as many fingers as deep in your throat as possible, breath in and out, deeply and quickly, to keep the pipes open. This worked with booze, hopefully it will with shrooms/sclerotia.)

Edit: If you ever need to puke and purge thoroughly, when the nausea hits, chug water like there's no tomorrow until your stomach is bloated with water. Then puking will come easily. This is by far the easiest, fastest, and best way.

Since you're new to shrooms your dose probably won't be that high. But if you're eating azurescens do a quick read on wood lover paralysis so you won't get freaked out if it happens to you.

Unless you're already aware of it.

Totally there are differences between species (personally that includes Semis, Ps Cyan, and many different varieties of homegrown Cubes).

Subjective effects from one week to the next, between genetically identical mushrooms from the same batch, can be infinitely variable and wildly different.

This is because our own psychology and physiology is infinitely variable from day to day.

People incorrectly attribute particular trips to specific strains or varieties. Then the next time they trip on that strain or variety they are then affected by expectation.

Potency variations can obviously affect how quickly the psilocybin gets into your body which can affect how quickly you trip...but the overall effects between strains and varieties will always be the same.

Levels of psilocybin and psilocin may differ between different strains and varieties but they're essentially the same thing. Psilocybin is metabolised into psilocin.

I've shared cubensis and cyanescens to the same friend for years, and he swears that he always gets nauseated on cubensis and not whatsoever on cyans. He also says cyans are less 'sloppy' but I dont know what he means.

Considering there are realistically only 2 compounds effecting your experience, there wouldn't be much room to argue different strain effects especially within the Cubensis family. It's not like cannabis where there is over 200 different cannabinoids that makeup the flower.

With dried specimens you're working with majority psilocybin, and much lesser levels of psilocin, and much much lesser levels(if any at all) baeocystin and norbaeocystin.

There is nothing outside of these compounds that will change your "high" that comes down to dosage, set and setting, and no trip ever being the same.

Species that are more powerful and grow outdoors such as Liberty caps, cyanescens, azurescens may have a different feel to them because they have higher ratios of those varying alkaloids and within the wood loving species(Cyanescens/azurescens/subaeruginosa, allenii) etc there is an unknown phenomena called wood lover paralysis that happens sometimes, nobody knows the true cause.

I've taken many different strains of Cubensis and I have never noticed different effects besides the dosage that I'm taking, and my reaction to the experience

That would be the usual assumption, but extensive experience shows otherwise.  :laugh2:

Especially for a Ps. cyan mutant that I cultivated extensively over 25 years ago for a long time.  No cube, at the time, or now, even comes close to those trips, sadly not even PE.  It was just...different.  And better.  Much better.

Don't you get nausea from the mushroom fiber or whatever (very scientific I know)? Cyans are more potent so you wouldn't need to eat as much which means that the stomach has less to handle. Some shrooms might be easier to digest as well?

Not enough room on the internet to fully describe tripping, let alone the differences. These are experiences...

Yes, 25 years ago everything was better!
(Just couldn't resist to type that...)

Trips seem to be a very personal, subjective experience. That' ll make it difficult to identify differences between strains. Until somebody finds a sponsor for such a study we will have to accept the broad statements.

Re: Different effects between species? [Re: Shroomei]

Actually no it wasn't so much "better" as it was "different".  Important distinction.  I've made some progress resurrecting that mutant strain from stored spore prints, and somebody I met suggested replicating the accidental heat shock that led to the mutation in the first place - which I think is a very good idea indeed, and something I'll try.

The strain was domesticated Ps cyan that survived a run-away cold fruiting chamber (modified fridge) when the temp control for heating got stuck.  Thought it had died but it revived and continued fruiting - only now instead of requiring cold temps to fruit it would do it at normal cube temps.  Potency was unaltered, and it passed this characteristic along in spores (epigenetics possibly).

As useful mutations go this was right at the top of the pack, though, and worth pursuing.

I agree cyans in general are much different than Cubensis, it could be a unique mixture of the compounds within them, or in more undescribable spiritual terms, but if these mushrooms don't contain any unique other compounds I can't say for certain what creates the difference outside of what I said, I have my own theories but they can't be proven
