Anyone know about cost for car work?
    #25643434 -

Estimate for total cost, parts and labor,

New front wheel bearings,
two valve covers replaced,
coolant flush and two new hoses

Appreciate a rough estimate, thanks

There should be estimate calculators for free online for the make, model and area.

You know aside from needing a press for the bearings possibly, everything else on that list could probably be knocked out some saturday in your driveway.  None of it is too complicated and you would save some $.

No one can accurately tell you this. It will depend to a great extent (probably by a factor of at least 3-4 fold) on year, make, model. Will also depend on whether you take your car to a ma and pop shop or the original manufacturer.

Good luck. I hate car repairs. I generally lube my ass before going. I find it is less painful that way. :buttsex:

2005 Monte Carlo ss supercharged

I considered it. I think the gaskets would be a pain in the ass, the coolant I've done before and would be easy, bearings would be new, maybe not too hard with my friends help, but it's winter and cold as fuck so I'm opting for just letting someone else deal with it

I think it's worth the cost

1 million dollars. every single time theres the slightest problem with any of the cars Ive had Im ALWAYS told "for the price to fix it you could replace the entire car" cars are an extension of the evils of the gasoline industry and they are made intentionally difficult to work on to make repair inpossible for the layman. My life has been stuck on permenant poor mode though so to be fair all my cars were less than 2k

Each wheel Bering alone will probably cost $400 for parts and labor.

$200 for coolant flush and hoses.

$200 for each valve cover gasket replacement..

So probably $1400 or more realistically.

can you explain whats involved in doing those things to justify the 200 dollar price please? I want to be less mad. If I didnt have a child Id stick to the tricycle.

Each car’s different.  You could use youtube and see if a vid of someone doing what you need is up.

I already said how much the parts cost. I can have them for about $250-300 and there's no way anyone charging me $1000 to do it would get my business

I'll just call a couple places.

My friend gave me a quote to do it and I felt like he was ripping me off that's why I asked

Thanks for the replies

About $850.  A shop will generally charge about $300 a side for wheel bearing/hub assembly.  Coolant flush is around $100.  I'd budget $1200 for whatever else they may find but it would be about $850 for just that work.  Indy shops like to charge $500-$1000 for a car as that's a good turnaround for their labor.  Over that can tie the shop up too much and adds the risk ov a dissatisfied/non-paying customer.

DIY and then you will know.
None of it is above noob level but may take some doing.
$700-$1500 depending on part cost and how hard it is to get to those valve covers.

Replace valve covers or just the gaskets?
Does it leak that bad or can you live with the amount of oil loss?

Im guessing about $600 including cheap parts and labor. $700-900 for higher end parts. It adds up quick when u add even simple things together.

pslyke, bikerfool, and lavod with the realistic estimates.

enkidu, does your friend have a professional shop with all the overhead associated with that shop, professionally trained ASE certified mechanics, a reputation to uphold in the community by providing quality, timely work, all the computer equipment and latest diagnostics (although this is becoming easier for the layman), and a high level of customer satisfaction to uphold?

if so and the labor cost is less than 8 bills then have your friend do it.

you pay for a professional and while i know that sucks at times, i know too well the cost of skimping.  i have a friend that i'd trust to rebuild a transmission in a 2010 ford 250 super duty, but i have another friend that calls himself a mechanic who i wouldn't trust to change the oil in my acura.

good luck.

You guys are getting robbed. A bearing replacement takes a mechanic a half hour, they'll charge it off the books as an hour, and then throw on the part. The mechanic I go to has a total price of just the labor of as the store next door. A wheel bearing should cost min 100-175 Max.

It takes more than .5 depending on the wheel bearing. That car would be easy wheel bearings 3 bolts hold it on once you dismantle the brakes. I'm assuming 3.8 engine 4 bolts per valve cover. A good friend like if I did the whole job for a buddy I'd ask 200$ or barter. A shop will want a fair amount more not sure but easy work. You sure you need more than 1 wheel bearing? They don't go out in sets.

a mechanic buddy of mine looked it up on his puter at his shop and it shows 1.33 hours per side for that make and model. yes, it will take less time 90 times out of 100 and it may occasionally take that long, but they're going to charge what the rate book (or program these days) shows, not their actual time.

we all love those mechanics that actually do good work and do it in a reasonable time at a reasonable rate, but not everyone has a mechanic buddy.  when it comes down to getting something done right by a shop that stands behind their work and does it in a timely manner every time, i'll pay.

for all of the work he mentioned (not just a couple wheel bearings), with parts, it's a grand every day of the week for a real pro shop in most areas of this country...especially on a 13+ year old car.

My friend told me 850 I think.

He works at a shop and does a lot of work on the side for a lot of people out of his garage

Ive been meaning to call a couple places for a quote, my friend recommended a good shop that also doesn't charge outrageous price either aparrently

Had a lot of good reviews online too

I think I do trust my friend to do solid work and stand by it. Just wasn't sure if he was over charging me or not, a lot of people i know who aren't mechanics told me way cheaper estimates, but idk how much they know, probably not a ton

Naw he plans on having it for a day or two, idk when exactly in that time frame hell be working on it.

I got into doing my own repairs for a minute but then it just started to seem more efficient to pay someone who does it all the time

It can be fun but it can be damn time consuming and I hate the cold
