Only put money in if you don't need it and won't need it in the forseeable future, I personally think it's definitely going back up but if you're putting in money now hoping for that to happen soon then I wouldn't recommend it. No one knows when or if it will but IMPO it's definitely going back up but probably not for a couple years (at least a few years for it to go up significantly anyway) and will be driven by advancing the tech and making it easier to use and adoption, as of now I'd even argue we probably have at least a little lower to go before we truly find a bottom.

The amount of growth we've saw with the tech in 2018 has been incredible and the amount of interest from powerful institutions and companies has been continuously growing as well and some of the partnerships are really exciting. This market is still in an extremely early stage so it's still new and a little complicated but it's been continuously advancing and getting better, but it'll still take people a while to feel comfortable putting money into the market after watching the roller coaster ride we've had this year. After all this is the first time it got massive mainstream attention so most of the people who only just got in this year weren't around during other times it's fallen by quite a lot, some of those times it dropped even harder then it did this year if you go by percentage loss but it'll still take time to recover from it.

TLDR: If you're hoping it'll go up a lot anytime soon I wouldn't recommend it as of now, if you're throwing some money in where you'd still be ok without it and are holding longterm (meaning a few years or longer) then yeah I personally would highly recommend dipping your toes in.

Bitcoin may have useful value but it has largely been proven that BTC got this high and higher due to price manipulation utilizing bots and Tether.

It is massively overvalued currently, especially considering how easy it is to get your BTC stolen. - my opinion.

And as far as crypto in general, there much are better options if you want to buy it to use it.. As an investment youre 2 years too late. Wait for it to hit the bottom because that could be a dollar or less.
Ive known some people that made a little money off BTC 9 months ago but the people still holding are where that money came from.

Crazy to think that BTC has "crashed" now that it's down to what, $3,800 dollars?

I know it's far off what it peaked at, but damn. I still remember when I was buying a coin for under $200 bucks.

Bitcoin can be stored on "cold" wallets that have never been on a computer that has connected to the internet. There is literally no way to steal those unless someone breaks in your home and forces you to give up your info and wallet file...If you're just holding bitcoin yourself it's pretty easy to keep it secure. Just don't leave it on exchanges ever.

As or whether to buy or not right now. Who knows, it might gain a bit of momentum and then have another giant sell off that pushes it even lower than it just was. (which is the lowest it's been since Sept 2017)

It's up 7.5% over the last 24 hours. I'm thinking it might drop even further than it did though. (sub $3000)

I was under the impression that was extremely unlikely if your key pair is generated properly (see https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2015/05/crypto-flaws-in-blockchain-android-app-sent-bitcoins-to-the-wrong-address) I think a lot of apps/programs take random computer data to help generate a key, hence making it extremely extremely extremely unlikely that could ever happen although maybe not impossible?

Maybe I'm wrong and the probability is higher? What is worrying is that, over time computer processing will advance enough that it could just check millions or billions of keys in seconds or whatever. But I also imagine by then, if any of the same cryptocoins are around, they would probably update the way they generates key pairs and people would be moving their coins to a stronger more secure wallet

Hmmm. I have thought of this before I just figured it was basically impossible but maybe not?

You are right, it is quite unlikely...

However, I knew of a project around that was using distributed computing to find collisions...and they actually were finding some. They were all very small balances, but the proof of work was done.
