    #2563734 - 04/15/04 03:16 PM (14 years, 13 days ago)

Been growing... On my second flush... All the shroom's I've been growing have had a habit of growing along or near the casing, and a cap is yet to open up... And ideas as to what I could be doing wrong? There's a pic of the current condition below... Any help greatly appreciated...

I'm an antidisestablishmentarianist, are you?

IME, Could be, too much water in the casing layer, lack of water in the casing layer or wrong ph of the casing layer, that?s all I can remember right now. Maybe some folks will add something else.

Maybe your strain needs coldshocking. As far as I know you can have problems with "overlay" if you don`t and then shrroms grow only at sides...other things can cause overlay too...just doing my first grow and initiated fruiting too late and now I have the same problem...

Cold-shocking is definitely required for this one. This can be accomplished by putting the colonised trays in the fridge for 24 hours. If you don't give this treatment the mycelium will completely cover the casing layer ("overlay") and this makes watering impossible . This condition causes mushrooms to only form on the sides of the trays (which will lower your yields). When this condition is reached, as a remedy the surface of the casing layer can be scratched open with a clean fork. Early exposure to fruiting conditions may lessen the risk of overlay.

That`s just part of a strain description...but I guess it`s generall information about what happens if you have overlay problems and yours sounds that way...
