Old rye grain viability question.

Hi,
I bought some rye grain about 7 or 8 years ago from a mycology supplies vendor with the intention of growing some mushrooms, but I never got around to it for one reason or another, though I have became more interested in the mushroom hunting and identification side of things. But I recently obtained some spores and it's piqued my interest once again.

I want to know if these grains will still work after all this time, or should I dump them and buy some more. They still look just as fresh as the day I received them, but I just don't know if they would still be nutritious enough, or if by using them it would increase the chances of contamination.

I also have some coir, would that have kept too?

8 years is a lot of time, I dont think it will work. The water on the grain should already be evaporated and the jar is prob cantaminated.

I think is better if you go with a normal pf tek, use a cheese grater and then can spawn it to your coir (but please pasteruize it and follow a tek).

I think maybe you're misunderstanding me. The grain has been in dry storage in a sealed bag. I haven't yet soaked, sterilised, or put them in jars.

Ups, I assumed that you bought a sterilized jar, my bad.

If some archelogist planted a 2000 years seed and it worked, I dont see why this will not. Just check that they dont smell bad and use it as any grain.

Yeah, I thought it might work, I don't see any reason why it wouldn't. I just wonder if it would effect my yield though, I'm sure after all this time the nutrients in it would have degraded, even though it hasn't spoiled?

You know what, I don't think anyone is gonna be able to answer my question unless they have direct experience. I think maybe I'll do two tubs for science, one with old substrate, and one with fresh new substrate to see if there's a difference in yield.
