I had a hard time getting a couple of the lids off grain jars in the SAB the other day. I want to prepare the jars with the lid flipped this time, to make it easier to take off. Question is, normally I've just been drilling a hole in the center of the metal lid and attaching a small bit of SFD. I don't want to use those jars upside down and have the filter get all wet. I plan of making a new set of metal lids, but attaching the filter to the underside of the lid. Does anyone have experience doing that, or think its a bad idea? thanks.

Plastic non mod lids are my go too for all jars. A quarter turn after inoculation is all you need to provide plenty of GE. You can get them for 3 bucks for a pk of 8 at any wallyworld.

24 plastic lids are 12 dollars on Amazon
Might even be cheaper
Drill a hole and attach the SFD to the top with blue rtv silicon
Plastic lids are far easier to work with than metal imo

The unmodified plastic lods work well for agar plates...but my.go to was cut up pieces of painter coverall taped with medical cloth tape.

I put a paper towel over and wrap lid in foil for sterilization

I love my plastic lids!!! No more rust! I wish I would have done them sooner!!! Sooo easy, plus I never put foil over top of them in the pc now. U probably should but I dont and I have never had a problem. Get the high temp RTV to make an injection port and to seal your sdf on with. The red one is the one most people use. The grey one is high temp also just read the front of the box. I have used both. I "drill" a hole in them with my dremel. I use the round pink sandpaper like attactment it makes the perfect size hole. It pretty much just melts thru the plastic. U can use an actual drill too but it can crack the lids sometimes I've found. Good luck!
