Judging field capacity by looking at the bottom of tub
    #25615926 - 11/15/18 08:30 AM (6 years, 2 months ago)

Hi guys, I recently noticed that tubs with a lot of sub in them can be wetter on the bottom because it presses on itself; water droplets gets squeezed out which makes colonization less quick there. Sometimes I use the exact same sub to do a shoebox and I don't see that problem; so for the shoebox the moisture content was right. Just curious if you guy's take into account the tub size when you determine the moisture content of the substrate? I am a kind of looking to see if the bottom of the tub can be a pointer to learn judging the moisture content. Anyone?

Substrates should not be deep enough or packed tight enough for this to happen

You have to squeeze the sub pretty hard to get water out of it when it's at field capacity.  The depth of sub wouldnt really squeeze water out of it at if properly hydrated. When it comes down to it field capacity is field capacity and should be judged by squeezing it with your hand.

I second this. Field capacity is the same no matter what size container you are using. Sounds like you just need to dial in the conditions a bit better on your bigger tubs.

On close inspection I actually think something else is the case... On the bottom of the tub there SEEMS to be less colonization because the sub is pressed against the plastic. This makes the difference between the colonized and uncolonized coir very clear; black and white. Where at the sides of the tub there is a lot of condensation going (or droplets..., I don't know how to call it). Because of that it's not so clear how much is colonized there. The condensation at the sides of the tub makes it look more colonized. I think the condensation is around the spots where it's colonizing.

Can you describe how you evaluate field capacity? Don't look up a definition, but describe in your own words how you test.

I squeeze a hand full. I have been playing with only a few drops coming out to a little stream coming out on purpose just experimenting a little.

So you are going above field and are wondering why you get more water at the bottom? If you are experimenting then you can complete it now. Stream when squeezed equals more water in the bottom. Gravity is the cause.

field capacity can mean many things. I have seen lot's of descriptions of field capacity. The only way to know what works best for you is experimenting.
Some say a little stream that comes to a hold quickly. Some say only a few drops. Some say squeeze soft... What is soft? Trying is the only way
One of the most enlightening experiments was to have half the tub what I thought was "right" at that moment and the other half of the tub the exact same substrate but with a little extra water mixed in. The difference in pinset was amazing; what I thought was field capacity had actually been to dry

Field capacity actually has a very specific definition.  For our purposes we are simply trying to achieve optimal water content for growing shrooms and the way to do it is pretty straightforward. I've no doubt you'll figure out what works for you.  Just keep testing and learning.  Good luck man

You squeeze hard and Max 10ish drops should come out. And by hard I mean mechanic's grip hard.

You can have a stream when you squeeze hard for casing layers. Substrates should be on the dry side. If it is too dry, you can always dunk at fruiting time, but the chances of that happening is pretty low tbh.

:whathesaid:

the bottom of your subs can also look to wet if you are misting too much. excess water wont absorb. it just settles:thumbdown:

Ield capacity: grab a small hand full, quick squeeze will get a few drops between your fingers, squeeze as hard as you can a quick stream. It is n never has been anything exact
