Trying out a new soft agar method. Prepared the agar and left it in a media bottle. Dropped a wedge in there, letting it grow to make sure there aren't contams. Then shaking the bottle to let it fully colonize the agar to pour into grain jars.
Here's day 4 of the wedge growth in the media bottle. How long should I let it colonize before giving it a shake?

If you have clean spawn and properly pasteurized substrate it's impossible to get a contamination before your first flush...people using dirty spawn like crazy

I'd rather spawn an iffy jar by itself and get a flush or two than toss it or risk a mono

Iffy Jars are a thing of the past when you are skilled with Agar and sterile tehnique and a good Liquid Culture method

Most people aren’t though which is why it has become such a popular method among newcomers What tryptkaloids said though still stands true for even advanced cultivators who may not want to toss out spawn, for whatever reason.
Personally, I have found shoeboxes to work great for exotic species as well

Nope I was just a noob who has learned much and experimented quite a bit in your period of absence When I first came back you had just started the retail edible thread which i was following along I’ve only ever worked with active species anyway

I've been so caught up with the farm that ive been too anxious to grow M217-a since I started the farm last year. I finally decided to see if it was still alive this week and I was overjoyed to find that it is! I'm starting a grow this week so I should get one of my signature real time logs going in the next couple of days. My strain is so potent and such a prolific fruiter that I never really got interested in growing other varieties

I agree.
I can get 100% BE, from paper spawn to paper, with 'added' bacteria, in bad fruiting conditions (low O2 and humidity). And then another 50-100% BE outdoors, in a tub surrounded and cased in compost-paper-peat-lime.
In optimal conditions I can get around 150-200%, with mildly dirty spawn. To get that many cycles I had to dunk and refresh the pH.
I have also noticed less bacteria when decent amounts of CaCO3 are added, but this is not conclusive. It may be to do with calcium-oxalate production by mycelium, pH, and the CaCO3 its self.

I find shoeboxes to be more time efficient as well as the other benefits. No messing with stuffing/taping holes. No liners.
I am prepping 70 jars right now which will all be shoeboxes

I fit 15 shoeboxes stacked on one shelf. The same shelf holds one monotub.

Yeah I have noticed the same thing. I can fit 12 shoeboxes in the same little spot my 56qt mono goes.

If you want bulk, shoeboxes are petty sweet. It's all about surface area.

On the other hand one monotub is easier to maintain than 7 shoeboxes

True. That was my only caveat. You can get away with zero maintenance if your spawn is clean and you have proper hydration and room temp. I treat my tubs the same regardless of size. The other benefit for shoeboxes is avoiding cross contamination. I use both. Only sketchy spawn has tripped me up so far. I don't mist.

I disagree. They both require basically nothing.
