Barley as a spawn? opinions?

My local store doesn't have oats under 50lb or Rye berries at any amount. They do, however, have barley. I've used the search engine, and came to the conclusion that barley is ok, similar in nutrition to rye, but otherwise slightly more difficult to hydrate. The shells are also a bother.
Do you agree with this information? Does/has anyone used barley?
I can document a process if anyone is interested.
Thanks in advance.

I'm a homebrewer and I considered using malt at one point. I don't think malt would be good for spawn (spent grains mix would be great for casing or sub), but if you're talking straight barley, that should be fine. If your concern is hydration, you can mill it. Lots of stuff can be used for spawn...

Dont mill it and try and cook it, you will have a mess to clean up. Barley works fine as long as its not milled and still has a hull on it. Hydration is something you are going to have to feel out just soak it overnight or cook it for a short time and it shouldn't be a problem.

Milling does not remove the hull, unless you're talking about completely pulverizing it. You can mill it such that it lightly cracks the hull. Probably not worth the investment unless you're making beer, though. If you're rinsing your grain, there shouldn't be a huge mess to clean up.
One problem with barley is that, once wet, it retains moisture really well. Almost too good, actually.

I've never thought of using barley, thats a neat idea. I've heard of the corn tek but I have been blinded at seeing anyone running that.
Good luck on your finds.

If you mill it in anyway you are going to damage the protective hull, if you damage the hull it will expose the endosperm. When you try and hydrate/ pc that you are going to have a starchy mess, trust me on this it will not end well. If you are going to use grain you need it to be whole aka not milled.

Expected it to have smaller measurements.
