texture question while colonizing
    #25618016 - 11/16/18 06:47 AM (6 years, 2 months ago)

Hello,

I have this one jar that is almost done colonizing but it looks pretty different from all my other jars. Instead of it looking wirey, it looks more dense and fluffy which none of my other jars look like. I've added the pictures below of the individual jar and some pics with a comparisson jar of what my normal jars look like. In the comparisson pics, the questionable jar is on the left. Just wondering if there is a cause for concern here?

Thanks!

You're good. Did you use a spore syringe? That happens with multi-spore syringes. I had a jar that had 3 different looking forms of mycelium growing in it. It's all good!

I sure did, thanks for the reply. That means we successfully (so far) colonized 10/10 jars .

Just curious...did the jar in question colonize much faster than the others or are they all on the same time frame?

Much slower in fact. I'd say he was about 1.5-2 weeks slower than our fastest jar. How come?

It could be for many reasons such as moisture level of the BRF Cakes (field capacity), genetics, contamination, adequate GE, etc.

When I do a run of BRF jars I always isolate and monitor the one or how ever many that aren't progressing like the others...Just be mindful moving forward

Mycelium grows different ways. looks like tomentose mycelium which is wispy or fluffy. Rhizomatic mycelium looks more branchy. some people debate about which is better but they are both healthy.

You can actually make tormentose grow rhizomorphic on agar by changing the nutrient factor.

Cool. I did know this, but haven't played around with it yet. Im guessing more nutrient density means more rhizomatic growth?

Honestly I don't know for sure...never tried it either I just remember reading this....

Rhizo and tomentose don't mean shit. You can force rhizo growth by changing media nutrition.

But there is this as well...

Tomentose and rhizomorphic are just different characteristics of the same thing: mycelium. Tomentose mycelium doesn't just hang out in one spot forever, it will colonize a substrate like rhizomorphic will. And the nutrient base is often an influence on the characteristic. You can take a transfer of rhizomorphic mycelium and put it to something highly nutritious and it can definitely change to tomentose.

Most of my MS plates look tomentose, regardless of media, because there's so many strains present. After a few transfers, they begin to look rhizomorphic. The change is due to less strains being present, not nutrition. I never change my media up either.

I have no experience with changing nutrients to try and "force" rhizo growth so I'm not the authority on that.
