Some questions for y’all
    #25617970 - 11/16/18 06:20 AM (6 years, 2 months ago)

Almost done with second flush and I have questions about the fruiting/drying process.

Q1: Do fresh mushrooms smell different than dried mushrooms? When I opened my desiccant chamber (tuppaware with desiccant at the bottom and screen on top so mushrooms
Don’t touch) my dried mushrooms smelled like uncleaned ass compared to when they were picked. Hoping it isn’t mold.

Q2: What are some smells of mold? Sweet? Sour? Poop? Just so I have an idea of what smells to watch out for.

Q3: I had a cluster of stumps from where I cut the mushrooms from the cake but didn’t want to bother the mushrooms growing around it because they were growing in clusters of 5-7 (most aborted). How long do these take to rot? Once I cut the matured fruits from the cluster and identified the rest as aborts I took a clean x acto knife and sliced the whole cluster off (stumps and aborts and all). Would these be safe to dry and eat? They were pretty big stumps so I don’t really wanna toss them if I don’t have to.

Im eating some this weekend as a celebration to a successful first grow but I wanted to check to make sure I’m not going to poison myself or anything. I can provide pictures soon I just haven’t made it home yet.

Maybe this will help me get some inputs.. do these look safe to consume? The cluster of stumps and aborts doesn’t look too good but the mushrooms imo look safe.

Congrats on your first grow!

Yes dried mushrooms smell nowhere near what they did when fresh. Hard to describe the smell, not a fresh smell that's for sure...lol

Not sure about molds, but I would assume different types would have different smells.

Yes, absolutely you can dry and eat the stumps, there's good stuff in em.

I'm more concerned with your drying method, they dont look completely dried. Would you care to elaborate how you're drying your shrooms?

Pick then place on paper towel with fan blowing on them for about 15-24 hours then a desiccant tub. These ones I just put in the tub so they might not be cracker dry yet. I have some in my storage container that are cracker dry after a couple days in the tub I will post a pic of them in a second

Stems snapped pretty solid on these ones. A couple of the fatter mushrooms I had in the tub were still moist in the middle so I sliced them in half and put them back in front of the fan.

Those do look a bit drier, and I would prolly gobble em down myself. I'm sure it's been said already, but I would recommend getn a decent dehydrator if ya plan on staying with the hobby. Hell, they have many uses, so it will serve ya well.

The quicker you can dry em, the better. I'm not sure about other drying methods, I grabbed a dehydrator before my first flush.

I guess as long as you're getn em cracker dry, you're GTG. Just remember, the quicker and hotter you can dry em the better.

Looks like its gonna be a good weekend. Have fun!

Absolutely! Grab that presto 6301/6303. You will not be disappointed!

These have been dried properly, you can see some differences. Ofcourse some varieties will differ.

These were all from MS, PFTEK grows.

To answer your question about smells: contamination can bring on a wide variety of smells. If you've done a few grows you'll be familiar with the smells of mushrooms, grains and whatnot, and any unfamiliar smell is probably due to contamination.

In my experience bacterial infections often have a sweet, sickly smell or the smell of dirty old socks. I've only encountered a fungal infection once and it didn't smell very strongly. Just slightly musty and earthy like moldy bread.

Anyway, while dried mushrooms smell differently than fresh mushrooms, I would never describe them as 'uncleaned ass', so that's kind of worrisome. Did you consume any yet?

No not yet. Once I moved some over to my other container they smelled kinda  salty like I’m use to smelling. I couldnt find any mushrooms in particular that had the smell coming from them so I’m thinking it may be the desiccant giving off the smell? It goes away after the container lid is open for a few seconds

What I planned on doing was as they dry I’ll take some and put them in mason jars so I have a tiny sample in each and I’ll open the lid to them after so long and give it a smell to see if it is in fact the mushrooms. The ones I planned on eating have been isolated from the rest and they smell fine after being in a separate container for a few hours.

I think if ya put em in airtight jars, not being correctly dried. You will find they will get some bend back to em, and perhaps an off smell.

This is my opinion, take it with a grain of salt. I have no experience with your drying techniques. I do know one correct way to dry shrooms, that's with a dehydrator that uses sufficient heat in order to lock in potency and to remove all moisture from the fruits.

I have silica gel canisters I got a pack of 30 for like 10 bucks so i always have some sort of desiccant with them wherever I store them once I believe they’re done drying (usually when stem snaps crisply). Definitely getting a dehydrator to avoid this headache again lol.

Gotcha, I wouldn't hesitate to have fun with em this weekend!

Keeping the desiccant with em, definitely a good idea. Once ya get a dehydrator, this won't be necessary but not a bad idea.

Have a great weekend!
Peace.
