What do you mean by "cover"?

Keep CO2 levels high during colonization. Do this by sealing your holes. It doesn't have to be perfect seals.

Casing is optional for cubes. Add that casing (Called a pseudo casing) when you mix up the tub.

Be sure to smell each jar before you add them to your tub. Any smell that isn't mushroomy shouldn't be used.

By “cover” i mean to cover with a trash bag or blanket. I’ve read quite a few threads that say to cover during colonization. I’m assuming it’s to keep the light out. The room mine will be in has quite a bit of natural sunlight during the day. I am spawning in bags of rye but I’ll definitely smell before adding to the substrate. Thanks for the tip. Any other tips are appreciated because I want this first grow to go good.

You can go right to fruiting at spawn. No need to colonize if your spawn is healthy. It is a preference. I do both with success. Casings for cubes is not needed and just adds additional vectors.

A natural or artificial daylight cycle helps fungus health. Mushrooms love light.

Covering up your substrate may help premature fruiting, but you'll only have that if you have contamination problems.

Thanks for the replies. Like I said all info is much appreciated. On the subject of contamination problems; I have one pretty large room that I will be fruiting in because of the FAE I’ll get in there. What would be the best method for transferring spawn to substrate without getting contains in. Can I just spray Lysol, or some other air disinfectant, all in the room and that be sufficient? Of course I will be wearing gloves, that are sanitized, and a face mask. Being this is my first grow I want to take all precautions. I know cubes are pretty resilient to contend but I want to be extra careful. The strain I’m going to grow is B+

Spraying the air doesn't really do anything apart from wasting your sanizers. Wipe down surfaces and clean yourself as a general course. Most bulk substrates are pasteurised, and don't need sterile techniques for inoculation, as long as your spawn is 100% colonized. Boths are resilient against contamination.

For bulk substrates that are sterilized, you will have to inoculate them in asepctic conditions, and expose them only when 100% colonised.

These are all pretty common questions that you'll be able to answer for yourself after some fun experimentation. This hobby is fun to keep it going and try different things. But here are some answers for you.

- no need to cover your tub with anything. leave it exposed to light

- case at spawning, after 100% colonization of bulk sub, or not at all. Everyone here has a different opinion on this and it has a lot to do with the climate in your region. It's winter where I am, so I'll put a light casing on my fully colonized bulk sub IF it doesn't seem to be able to hold good surface moisture by itself. Usually though, I just don't case at all.

- If you have healthy spawn and properly pasteurized bulk sub, you can birth in almost any conditions. To be extra cautious, I birth my spawn in my bathroom after shutting the door and wiping everything/spraying the air with 70% rubbing alcohol. I also wear gloves and a mask. Really though, I think I'm being over-cautious. The mycelium has a pretty good immune system of its own at that point.
