Why do they come sealed in plastic at Wal-Mart?

They don't come sealed. 9 times out of 10 there are breather holes. And EVERY time they are wrapped loosely in cellophane.

Loosely? Ill take a picture and post if I remember the next time I run to the store. Its tightly wrapped. And some are sliced, which should make them go bad faster.

All the ones around here have a way to breath, with the exception of the dried Shitake that the local Wal-Mart sells.

Looks like they went and made shit complicated now. Found this on google. I knew they did it with red meat sold at Wal-Mart, so it doesn't surprise me that companies are now doing it with mushrooms.

Use of modified atmosphere packaging to preserve mushroom quality during storage.

Palacios I1, Moro C, Lozano M, D'Arrigo M, Guillamón E, García-Lafuente A, Villares A.

Author information

Abstract

Mushrooms have attracted much attention due to their excellent nutritional and sensory properties. However, they are highly perishable and rapidly lose their organoleptic characteristics. Many methods have been employed for mushroom storage, such as packaging, blanching, canning, or freeze drying. Among them, modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) has been widely employed for preserving fresh mushrooms. MAP provides an affordable packaging system that partly avoids enzymatic browning, fermentation and other biochemical processes by maintaining a controlled gas atmosphere. Several factors, including optimum CO2 and O2 partial pressures, permeability, package material, thickness, or product weight, must be considered in order to design a suitable modified atmosphere package for mushrooms. Thus, different strategies are available to preserve mushroom quality after harvest. The article presents some promising patents on use of modified atmosphere packaging to preserve mushroom quality during storage.

My home grown king oysters last weeks in a ziplock when freshly harvested. Reminds me to do it again. Got sooo much from one monotub. Grows like coral, very funny.

Look, I'm not trying to piss you off. I'm just saying that my mushrooms have been holding up just fine the way I described. I even had them in my car for several hours with ice packs.

I think a brown paper bag is probably a great way to hold them, and I actually plan on picking some up.

Harvested 4 and 5 days ago, The only sign of degradation is a SLIGHT tackiness, they kind of want to stick together:

These were surrounded by paper towels, and sealed in baggie or Tupperware.
On the other hand if they go straight into a baggie they are constantly touching their own condensation and rot very quickly.

I can only speak from my own experience but I keep fresh shrooms in a shoebox (the same that you grow in with lid) in the fridge for a week with no noticeable change in freshness.

I'm not saying it is the worst possible way, just that there is kind of better ways to store them. So long as you don't grow mold, and they are not slimy, you should be good. I just want people to be mindful that they are handling food and can fuck it up to the point of making themselves sick, although produce doesn't grow as dangerous bacteria as meat does. Should they go bad, you wont get super sick, probably just an upset stomach.

When I used to grow in a closet/greenhouse,I would eat mushrooms, and just go hang out in there for what seemed like hours. It was oldschool too, with cool mist and ultrasonic humidifiers.
I'd be covered in a fine mist coming out.

I get a very noticeable natural high spending time harvesting, cleaning, dehydrating, storing.. Harvest days rock!! My mood is so elevated! I make up little songs and play air guitar/drums - whatever ya need! Hah!
It's much worse than that actually.. lol

No time to be lazy. Getting shit done and enjoying it. One task to the next.. no cig breaks.. TCB!
I'm having a great time just thinking about it! I might be in for a really good one this weekend!

So much satisfaction and accomplishment and validation and conquest! and more than that too!

I confess I have not taken more than 5 dried grams at once. Tonight I plan on taking that trip.

...I also confess that I am nervous about it.

I did that a few weeks ago, and started reading Game of Thrones after eating them. It got to the point where it felt like I was spending half an hour per page, and eventually I melted into Westeros.

Enjoy it!

:woot:

I just made a soup last night with 5g P. cubensis 'Taman negara'

They were more potent than I was expecting and it was excellent.

My body dissolved, I time traveled and I did some drawing that I found so incredibly beautiful I was in tears. I felt as though I lived a thousand life times. From 9pm to 3am...

Good luck, good vibes.
