Store bought agar for isolation
    #25616092 - 11/15/18 10:17 AM (6 years, 2 months ago)

Is store bought agar used for food purposes sufficient for mushroom genetic isolation, or should I use "research grade" agar? Also are certain agar types more resistant to contamination?

If I was making my own agar what, if any nutrients would I need to add? Also would gelatin work as an agar substitute?

You can use either grade of Agar and no, not that I'm aware of.

Don't isolate, just clean up.

Unless you are determined to get predictable, consistent results, MS cultures will serve you just well. Isolating requires you to test a lot of culture, and will take anything from 10-100 transfers.

Agar recipes are plentiful, use the menu bars or search engine.

I cant wait to start getting into agar...it seems alot more manageable and easier then doing spore syringes or an LC.

If you've got sterile procedures down agar should be a piece of cake right?

There are different types of agar for cooking. Be sure that it's 100% agar, with no added sugar.
