Bulk pasteurized mix question
    #25616360 - 11/15/18 12:14 PM (6 years, 2 months ago)

Asking for a friend.  My friend  has some bags of sealed pasteurized mix she bought online.  Seems like good stuff, coco mix.

My issue is that she got it in the mail like a week ago and she hasn’t even colonized jars yet.  I said I thought it was a huge risk, that it should have been used immediately.  She put it out in the fridge and seems confident it will be fine in the 14 days or whatever it takes her to colonize jars.

I think she ought to toss it and order new bags when it’s time but I don’t want to fight her on it.  She’s kind of a know-it-all and she’s done more batches than I have but it still feels like contam suicide.

Please advise,  thank you in advance

Your friend probably shouldn't leave their coco coir mix in the fridge. I Just leave mine in the bag somewhere. after 14 days I would put your coir in an oven bag and bake it for 90 minutes at around 200 degrees.

Thats what i do if my substrate sits around for more than a week without being used. Coco coir can go a while after being properly pasteurized, but I always bake it again before use to make sure.

In the future your friend might want to look into prepping their own coir. Its easy and cheap.

I used to use bods tek but it’s been years.  I remember using coffee once and it contaminated bad.

If you have a tek suggestion id like to see what kids are doing these days.  I always thought the oven bag tek was cool but I’ve never actually dig into a specific tek

Here is the coir tek I have been using and it hasnt done me wrong yet. Simple and effective. Although I will mention that I HIGHLY recommend double bagging your coir with a second oven bag. A single one always tends to rip and spill hot coir all over my floor.

Nice! I like this.  Simple.

He mix she has says it has mineral water, coffee grounds, gypsum and “choice nutrients” whatever that means.

Thoughts?

The link I posted does not use coffee. Its simply water (tap water works fine), a brick of coir, and some vermiculite. They mention gypsum but that's optional. I dont use gypsum and i get good results.

Never used gypsum but it’s cheap on amazon
