Has Anyone Ever Used These Before??

So a friend of mine works in the medical field and gave me one of these. They said they can get me more if they will work for my Mycology hobbies. The package contains a long cotton swab with a twist top lid attached to the top and a test tube sealed with a twist top containing what appears to be agar. My friend told me they use these for taking throat cultures. I thought these might make good culture slants if I add some wood coffee stirrers to them, or possibly use these instead of Petri dishes to germinate spores. There is no information on the package about the media's content, so I wasn't sure if these would work or not, as I don't know what is in the agar looking substance in the bottom of the test tube. I love that these things are pre-sterilized and sealed! If anyone has ever used these before or anything similar, I'm curious to know what your experience was with them. Thanks in advance!

If you can get them cheap enough, use them, but you'll probably need to replace the medium.
What's their product code?

The only thing I see on the package that looks like a product code is M9W 6Y3, so I suppose that may be it. My friend is willing to give me some for free if they'll work for me, which is excellent! Even if I have to replace the media inside the tube and resterilize it in my PC, I'll still have some nice tubes for slants and a good source for sterile swabs for agar work.

Lol, that's a Canadian postal code. No stress, it's likely to be a transport medium, which has no nutrients. Your myc will grow, but if it's gonna be for long term storage, it may be better for the medium to have some nutrients. Put enough agar in to leave the tip of the swap partially submerged. The swab should be colonized as well, making inoculation from the slant (doesn't have to be a slant, strictly) a lot easier.
The cap may have two positions: One that allows GE and pressure equalization during sterilization, and one that seals it. Seal it when storing.

Lol shows how American I am! I believe you're right about it being a transport medium, as the package says it's a collection and transport system. I will follow your advice and mix up a batch of MEA to put into the tube when I'm ready to use it. It definitely would make starting plates super easy in the future! After I get a good culture isolated on my first set of plates, I'll try this out. If it works, I'll ask my friend for more of them! Thanks again for the advice and if it works out for me, I'll post up pics and results to share with the community.
