PICS OF HARVEST ADDED - APE Grow - Possible bacteria?
    #25615873 -

Hi Guys,

Part way through my first APE grow and I think one of the tubs is on its way out.

I have 3 tubs.  1 that was MS To Rye grains that looks fine.  Two others I went Agar to Rye grains (Same Agar dish for both and same rye grain sterilisation cycle for both)

I then used Damions bucket tek to make a CVG substrate and spawned into those.  Left to develop for 10 days with holes taped up, and finally put into fruiting about a week ago by removing the tape.

I have been fanning daily and have probably misted once or twice.  I've been going easy on the misting though because I've always previously over-misted, and these tubs have maintained a glistening surface since putting into fruiting.

All tubs smell ok, but of the two tubs from the Agar spawn - one of them is developing a yellowish coloring.  It does however also have a few pins, which none of the others have...

Whats your opinion?

"Healthy" Tub:

And the "Questionable" Tub:

Sorry to be a pain...but bump! Any opinions?

I've heard of "Myc piss" before... But never seen it. Could this just be that? More pins seems to be developing on the yellowing tub than any other right now... even after less than a week of fruiting.  I heard APE were slow to pin?!

Looks dry to me. Are there small droplets or yellow nastiness on the substrate?

The black speckles on the questionable tub dont look good and I've heard them referenced when talking contams.  I would quarantine that sucker till someone gives you a definitive answer.

I'm not very familiar with contams yet...

The yellowing doesn't appear to be a liquid.  There certainly aren't yellow droplets in any case.  I've been super careful of over misting these because in the past I've misted pin's and caused a ton of aborts...

The black speckles are almost like the coir coming back through.  It looks like the myc kinda covered it up and is now receeding to show the coir again...

I agree with TheAtlantean. It looks a little dry.
Give it a mist, and keep an eye.Maybe have to mist more as needed, but be careful not to overdo it.
You want a light sheen of mist across the surface.
Doesn't take much.
There are plenty of knots tho.:super:

@Guy on a buffalo:Those specks are just coir.
Keep us posted.

So the tubs have a tonne of pins, but I think they are a little dry. Some have some half to 3/4 inch mushrooms with fat blue heads, but they dont seem to be growing any more.

Should I mist them more often? (Im afraid to mist actual mushrooms)

Bottom water?

Or do nothing?

Heres some more photos...

3 tubs zoomed out...

and some close ups.. Pins galore on this one! I hope they grow out.  When I get pin sets like this they always abort on me.

Whats up with the guy with the super dark head in this picture?  I Feel like some of these are almost ready for harvest...but they are so short and stubby I'm reluctant!  Any experienced APE Growers want to chime in?

APE have got to be my favorite shroom I've seen so far.  Love the look of them fat blue fuckers.

Great job!

Some of the darker ones will probably abort, and you'll notice the stipe start to turn blue and get softer.
When they get like that, probably a good idea to harvest pretty quick.
I like to watch then and if they stop growing along with the rest, they're done.

Also, with a heavier pinset and with the sub pulling away from the sides already,I would probably give them a bottom water.
Ape seems to like more water, but don't try to mist it on(could ruin surface and pins),bottom watering works better for me.
:goodluck:

Thanks guys.  I am also loving the look of these guys, but a little worried about how short and stunted they are coming out!

How much water would you suggest? 1/2 a cup or so to begin with?

I harvested this guy... he looks done with life. Lots of darkening of the cap, seemed dead compared to the rest.

My first APE Mushroom! Weighing in at a diddy 4.2g wet.  Anyone have any idea how strong these things are? I'm thinking of starting with half my usual dose...?

I'm just hoping the rest of the pins develop properly.  Theres a lot of activity going on down there, but I can't figure out if things have stalled or not...

Whats the concensus on the browning / yellowing? I think from the photos its clear two tubs are affected and one isn't.  The one that isnt was made from multispore syringe.  The two that are affected both came from different areas on the same agar plate that looked like a monoculture...

I've run that monoculture through about 3 consecutive plates now to try and clean it up if there is some kind of bacteria in there.  It all looks great - even from plate 1.  I just have this strange color change going on... but the plate it came from looked great.

It looks like the yellowing is from dryness.
Give them a light mist from time to time, just don't over-do it.
I like my surface to have a million tiny beads across it.
A couple fine sprays every day or other day is all it takes.

If the sub still pulls away with you keeping the surface good,I would bottom water after the pinset.

Hmmm... I thought blueing was from dryness!  I'm really scared to mist pins as I've had so many abort on me in the past.  I have been doing it but only very lightly and once a day.  Then afterwards I set up a fan to blow "past" the boxes for about 5 minutes (Never directly at)

I bottom watered one of them just now.  I'll give them all a mist too and keep an eye on how much water she sucks up before doing anything else on the others.

Am I right in thinking lack of water could cause the short, stunted mushrooms?

Edit: I don't understand how my boxes seem to have a lot more condensation on the plastic, but less surface moisture than in your pictures....

I Really can't wait until I learn how to read surface conditions properly haha.

So I just harvested a few... Bottom watered after with 1/4 cup of regular tap water.  Lets see what happens.

Lots of pins not developing and also clear areas of no growth.  Theres something funky going on here, but at least I'm getting some results.

The tub with the most activity is from the same agar plate as the one with the least.  Guess theres just something dirty in there...  Heres the best looking one - Again, certainly something amiss here, but some stuff is growing out A-OK...

Edit: The bottom left blotch is where I cut a mushroom off.  The larger area to the right of it though is something else entirely...

So I harvested tonight.  Everything looks pretty sad, but I'm ok with the way things went.  Not sure I'll get another flush, but going to give it a try.  It's pretty clear from the yields that Agar box 2 has a pretty bad bacterial infection going on.  The other two also don't look great,. but they aren't as bad.

Wet Yields:

Multispore Box: 162g

Post harvest:

Agar box number 2 (Same agar as box 1): 72g wet

Pre Harvest:

Post Harvest:

Agar Box Number 1: 156g wet (looks like more but there are lots of small mushrooms)

Post harvest:

Some close ups...do these look ok? I think I harvested late, since a lot of the mushrooms were very soft.  I know mushrooms can grow Penicillin - does anyone know what it'd look like? I'm mildly allergic to it...

Dried now...

Multispore Tub: 14.4g
Agar Tub 1: 15.3g
Agar Tub 2: 6.3g

It could have been much worse but also much better.  Got some more in the oven now to see if I can do better next time

First try of them on Saturday.  They are so blue!
