How to add a SHIP to a polypropylene filter box
    #25614080 - 11/14/18 11:05 AM (6 years, 2 months ago)

Hey dudes,

I've been gone for a bit but haven't stopped growing shrooms. I've recently switched from glass jars to polypropylene filter boxes. I really like these boxes, especially since I can stack two 1200 mL boxes (roughly 1 1/4 quart per box) in my undersized PC.

Unfortunately, I have a hard time fashioning a SHIP on these boxes, since silicone has a rough time bonding to PP. I'm currently using multiple holes in the lid in a concentric pattern, with silicone through each hole connecting the outer glob of silicone to the inner glob, if that makes sense. This works okay and keeps the SHIP in place, but since there is hardly any bond between the PP and the silicone, it's not an airtight seal and I suspect it's been leading to some contams lately.

I was thinking I could try to make a gasket with some sort of ring on the top and bottom of the lid with bolts squeezing them together on a glob of silicone. There'd be a hole in the lid in the middle of the rings under the silicone.

Another option would be to forego SHIP's entirely and just inject through a cracked lid like a schmuck, but I really like SHIP's.

Am I missing something?

If I am understanding your question the solution would be to score the plastic up where the filter will be prior to applying glue so there is more surface area for bonding to occur. Does that make sense?

Thanks for replying. Unfortunately, I already tried that. I tried sanding the polypropylene and also tried scoring it in a crosshatch pattern with a knife. It did improve the bonding a little, but the SHIPs still came loose from the PP. It doesn't fall out completely, so it still functions, but moisture might creep between the PP and silicone and transmit contams that way.

wtf is a polypropylene filter box? Take pictures of this thing and show where the current SHIP is. SHIPs suck anyway.

Might just stick to using traditional, conventional, tried and true methods.

It's not worth fitting more in your pc if they just fail on you.

I would just use jars and unmodified sfds. You've already wasted time, money and resources, just call it a fail and do it the way basically everyone else does it.

My SFDs always have a tough time sticking to plastic lids, regardless of how many grooves I get into it. One thing that helped is using extra silicone to gradually rise from the lid to the top of the SFD, creating a sort of mesa/butte formation. The other thing I do is tape the perimeter of the SFD with 2 layers MP tape. This holds the SFD in place very well. I'm not sure why nobody else seems to do this as an extra layer of protection.
