Psilocybe cubensis "Brazilian" on cow manure

I found a source for washed cow manure recently and thought I'd see how it would work. The manure is collected from underneath grates near the cows feeding trough. The particulate matter is seperated from the solids. The particulate solution is then used as fertilizer to spray on grazing fields. I recall this process stinking up an area very badly for a day or two afterwards...I am sure some of you are familiar with the experience. The solid portion looks much like chewed up straw with a very small portion of grain. This solid portion is not only the manure from the cows, but also any feed waste that falls and whole straw. I pasteurized about 2 gallons worth at 170F for 1.5 hours. I then spawned with 1.5 qts Brasilian colonised millet. I placed one portion into a plastic hat and filled the rest into a gallon zip-lock bag. Neither was growing very fast if at all due to improper moisture content. I had the hat covered with foil so I poked several holes in the foil to allow moisture to escape. I opened the plastic bag at each corner to allow the same. Both started colonizing very well afterwards. Both substrates survived periods of extremely high heat peaking at 106F for two consecutive weekends. There is no time line here since colonization took so long do to my errors. This is the progress: 4/5

I really have to get over my introvertness and go ask a farmer for some shit. I get a little where I pick shrooms but never enough.

just go do it, and if they ask what you're doing, say you use it for fertilizer. simple. never been hassled about it, just act normal and casual, dont make them think you're suspicious.
now get out there and get some shit!

I have seen him pull them from far more interesting places than a simple top hat

I have yet to ask a farmer for his manure. Many landscaping companies have huge piles of compost and manure to offer, this is where I obtain mine. Joshua

The bag substrate has become contaminated. It's no suprise though as I had the bag opened without a filter for about 2 weeks.

It's not too bad. I did this more as a test for the substrate. I'm not disappointed. Now I know that the substrate works well and can use it in other projects.
Thanks for the offer of luck though...I don't think I'll ever pass that up!

"We aaalll need somebody to leeean on!"
After harvesting I filled the hat with a weak H2O2 solution for 12 hours. There were a ton of pins on the casing, but only a few developed. This is likely due to less than optimal substrate hydration. __________________________________________________ 5/6/04 The hat substrate contammed as well with a green mold. The substrate works well, although next time a casing will be applied to act as a contaminant barrier. Joshua
