SFD too big?
    #25613741 - 11/14/18 07:49 AM (6 years, 2 months ago)

Setting up some quart jars to make spawn for the first time. I purchased some wide mouth filter disks, I'm using wide mouth jars, and I guess I just assumed they would be the same size as the jar opening. They appear to be slightly larger that the mouth of the jar and over hang. I can still screw the ring on, it just mashed the overhang down around the sides. Is this normal?

They should be fine and fit into the lid pieces.

It's cheaper to put a 1/4" hole in the lid and silicone a nickel-sized piece of sfd over it.

They do not fit. The disks are 90mm. My jars appear to be 80mm at the opening. They are ball wide mouth quart jars. The disk overlaps the opening. Is this normal? Ive read through tons of teks and threads, not a single mention of this anywhere. Just trying to understand if this is normal or if I've gotten the wrong size somehow, even though everything says for wide mouth. And thank you so much for responding. The guy above was just laughing at me or something? Idk seems kinda rude when I was just looking for some info. I am new. This is all new to me.

They may work, never used them like that before but probably as long as the ring is making good contact.

As was said before there's a lot of benefit to just retrofitting your lids. Take the lids the jars came with and poke a hole with a drill or thick nail. Cut the filter disks into smaller peices (many people cut circles but I find it easier just to cut the state into a grid). Glue them over the hole with silicone and you got lids that'll last quite awhile.

Yea seriously just cut them up and modify the lids. I thought with the little extra size of the lid going around the thread *could fit it.

I don't think it's in the main list because they're pretty straight forward cut & paste. Here's one written by Hamloaf on plastic lids but same deal.

Ive already drilled 4 holes in the lids, I was following a tek and lots of threads that made it seems the easiest way is to just put the filter disk, then the top and ring. Thank you for replying. I'm at the point of just bailing. I was having fun at first, but now I'm just stressing out wether I'm doing things right or not.

Trace the outer edge of the jar onto the disk and cut it with scissors or a razor blade

At first I thought they were suppose to go under the lid. I put the lid first, the disk over that, and then just pushed the ring down over it and screwed it down. The edges of the disk pushed down and I was able to screw the ring down good. Hopefully that works. Im gonna go purchase some more lids today, both metal and plastic. Im gonna just attempt multiple different styles I've seen and see what I  like/works.
