over cooking oats?
    #25612643 - 11/13/18 05:58 PM (6 years, 2 months ago)

I'm trying to cook up some oats for the first time to make some spawn. I'm following a bod tek. After boiling the oats for about 30 minutes, seems there are many that have broken open. I'm wondering what the right ratio of non cracked open to cracked open ones could be? I'm not sure if I over cooked this or what.

If its not like mostly mushy starch town then you're  fine. It's hard to over cook em. That said, it's easy to under-dry them. Be sure they're dry to the touch before you load em.

It was pretty mushy. I've dumped it, preparing to start over.

How much are you prepping? I do huge loads at a time, but small amounts are relatively quick and easy.

I figured 210 grams per quart jar, and I was going to do 6, so 1260 grams total. I'm using a 16 quart pan. thank you!

Just follow the tek and be sure to drop the heat to low once boiling and then try for just 20min. Use a timer. Pour em into a colander and strain em afterwards then leave em out overnight to steam dry. That's what I do. They shouldn't dry out too much.

This stuff seems to be cooking up super quick. It looked ready by the time the water got to a rolling boil. A couple have popped open here and there. They are fairly soft if I squeeze on them.

I allow more to burst. The volume dry swells double. Slightly dry is better that slightly damp. You wont need to wait overnight. Use the papertowel test. If there's any drops absorbe then it's not dry enough to load.

Sure, you'll  be fine with em hydrated that much. Just keep it clean from there on.
