4:1 will work fine. Plus you have even more.....

4:1, or 1:4? (Spawn:bulk mix) i wouldn't suggest it until you're comfortable identifying clean spawn... yields will reflect roughly one dry ounce per quart of spawn, bulk mix has little more to do with yeild than just water retention: I've had little difference between 1:1, 1:2, 1:3, or 1:4 in yeild... higher the bulk mix in the ratio, the less you have to mess with it for subsequent flushes, but the slower it will colonize... if bacteria or mold is missed in spawn, the difference 1:4 may be impending failure; whereas 1:1 will generally put out at least one flush before succumbing to secondary decomposers
With faster colonization, virtually no difference in yield, more resistance to contamination, and 75% of bulk material being saved for additional tubs/boxes, 1:1 just struck me a no brainer

Ok,
1:1 = 1 part cake 1 part coir. I am correct? I want to make sure I fully understand. This is all new to me so want to do it make sure Iβm not assuming things I donβt really know.

Yes... cakes are generally 1/2 pints, so with 2 cakes you'd use a pint of coir, and with 4 cakes, a quart of coir, for 1:1

Alright thanks!
Bust em up mix together and watch it grow... From what understand same less misting needed but same FAE lid flipped upside down humidity 95% and temp 65-75 degrees.
As long as I have all that right them I'm good to go...
BTW my cakes are doing so much better since I started this post

I (and others) just leave them snapped until full colonization, then unsnap or flip lid to increase FAE once fully colonized, or with the development of pins(with shoeboxes)... I flip lids at spawn for unmodified monotubs

I like 1:1.5 but the .5 is a top layer

As long as my spawn is clean it's worked great. As long as my spawn is clean it always works great lol. I'll try 1:1 and 1:1.5 side by side both with a top layer. I'm currently PCing grain for G2G. I will spawn the recieving jars when ready, expectedly next week.

Clean spawn is imperative: especially with higher bulk mix ratios... why I prefer 1:1... I top layered my last round of shoeboxes, but only superficially (1/8"-1/4"), and still only 1:1 (saved a little straight coir for each box) just to cover exposed grains and help maintain moisture

So I just watched the monotub video and so seems like a simple process. Do you suggest I use oats since I haven't started colonizing jars or will BRF cakes be ok? I know the discussion has been around BRF cakes but if there is a more efficient way, I'm down to try. But if it really doesn't matter. That's fine too. I have all the stuff for the BRF cakes and I understand they will be difficult to break up so they'll distribute evenly.

Cakes can be used for spawn no problem: a few here prefer them to grain prep... grain colonizes a bit faster IME, but if you've already got cakes started, use them!

Thanks will do. I assume that when they start pinning is when I know the tub is fully colonized. Or will is is when you see mycelium in the mixture.
"spawn run is 8-10 days. pins in 10-14 days. harvest in 15-21 days.(best case)"
This is all I could find in the monotub section.

Wait till you see pins. I usually wait till I have ample knots and pins before introducing fresh air

Just remember that evaporation(along with full colonization (solid white) ) is a pinning trigger, so not really important to occur prior to the formation of knots at minimum

Cakes can be spawned to shoeboxes... no need to fruit cakes unless you're testing your ability to maintain conditions IMO... I think cakes are more difficult than boxes and tubs
