foam/fuzz on the inside of the stem (cubensis)
    #25610678 - 11/12/18 09:27 PM (6 years, 2 months ago)

when cutting open the stem of this one I noticed some white/grayish fuzz. I'm curious to know if this is a common occurrence or something potentially hazardous.

Here's another one that looks worse than the previous one and I'm worried that the fuzz on this one is a farther along version of whatever is on the other one in the other photo. In any event could someone please let me know if these should be avoided? I ate some fresh ones a couple of weeks ago and all went well and then I ate some dried ones (which I'm beginning to think were not all that dry) and had a very confusing and uncomfortable experience that I'm concerned might have been a result of eating some mold that had grown inside of the stem of the semi-dried mushrooms that I did not know was there. This is what prompted me to cut the stems open.

Is that supposed to be a dried cube? It doesn’t look properly dried to me, it should be cracker dry.
Hard to tell, but that cold be mold, especially if it’s still a little wet.

No it's not all the way dry but it's as dry as the ones that I ate the other day and had a horrible time with so I decided to cut them open out of suspicion and found that stuff inside.

Yeah it definitely has a blueish hue to it but it's also slightly gray. It's like a combo of white, gray, and blue. The thing that's weird though, and also difficult to see with the picture, is that it's fuzzy.

I'm actually not totally sure what to call it. I only got nauseous, which is to be expected. No fever or any other symptoms. However, I was having some really bizarre and uncomfortable body sensations that are difficult for me to explain/recall. my head kept dropping all of the sudden and I had to "catch" it and I also felt extremely tired the whole time and had tunnel vision. Mentally, I felt like I had gone insane. Anyway I roamed around for 3 hours straight until the effects kind of wore off a little. I just felt poisoned I guess but maybe that's what a bad trip is.

Look like a normal inside stem of a mushroom, the stems are hollow with a fluffy surround under the surface. With your trip it sounds like symptoms of not tkaing enough, how much did you take?

Well that’s good news. I was kicking myself at the thought of making it through all of the more difficult and crucial moments only to screw it all up by not drying them properly. I had about 2.5 grams. I was by myself  so I didn’t wanna get too lost. Thank you for your take on it. I was really worried that I may have eaten some dangerous mold. I think I just need to invest in a food dehydrator

Here's another one that has what the other one had but to a greater extent so that it's easier to see with a picture. It's not necessarily the color that bothers me it's the color combined with the fuzzy texture. But this is normal right, or at least not dangerous?

Looks fine..Are you drying them in a de-dehydrator? I'm not sure they look cracker dry

You should as those won't last very long when you air dry them

I finally managed to find a food dehydrator. I think next time though I may go the desiccant route. Thanks again for letting me know what you thought about them.

I tossed them in a food dehydrator and now they're dry. The fuzz on the inside has still got me a bit nervous but I'll bag them up and keep an eye on them for a couple of days and if I don't see a color change or growth of the fuzz then I'll know that it's just a natural part of the inner stem of the mushroom

its natural .    sometimes if they dry slowly the myc starts to recover an gets fuzzy again.  sometimes the spores will germinate in the caps of super mature fruits  an theyll get 'fuzzy' again as well.  should be about 8-10 hrs at 120F with normal size fruits in a dehydrator
