I read somewhere at one point that the organism develops fruits by reaching towards moisture. Kind of opposite the formation of stalactites.

So I believe I have some aborts.. should I pick em now?

But I need some opinions on these fruits.  Some appear to be dry but they have “fuzzy” feet which we be due to too much watering from what I understand. And some look like they busted open and are really tiny?  Should I pick those or leave em?

Interestingly oysters and other gourmet mycelium (not all) will push fruits towards oxygen.
I think it may vary depending on the species and a few other factors.

I Would pick the ones with the hairlip, leave the rest. That could be from the cake being a little too wet pre colonization. That cake looks good though. Fuzzy feet is due to it wanting more oxygen

Looks like I'm going to start a T-Gel log soon. I did a mock test with added grain flour, but no cooking.
The T-Gel was assembled as I have directed, but after the flour and mixing, it was poured.

At the same time I also assembled the plates open to air, and also not bothering with anything else.
The idea was to see if anything germinated and grew out, essentially a worse case scenario.

----

After 3 days I got 3 spots of green mold, coming from bran in my brown flour.
Even after 6 days there was no visible bacteria, yeast or other.

Note: It's likely the mold was present in the flour-bran.

----

Out of 10 plates with T-Gel plain (no flour), assembled open to air, 0 germinated mold.

----

I clearly need to run various test's to see what is happening. Either bacteria dies, or just don't germinate.
If it directly kills the endospores, or organism after endospores, transfers should be clear.

Note: Mold spores may transfer and germinate, not much can be done.

The mock recipe was T-Gel with 1g brown flour per 200g.
Roughly 50% tea solubles 50% brown flour.

There shouldn't be an issue with inoculating LC solution 4-5 days after sterilizing, right?

I wouldn't think so, maybe over a week or something it would be different.

Not as optimal as immediate of course but I doubt it will soil, I wouldn't do that with any large operation.

Why would over a week be different? If everything was killed and the jar is filtered properly, in theory I'd think it'd be good forever. I just know that equipment can fail so a lot is just comfort so I'm curious if anyone thinks it's crazy to use that late.

I'd like to say that if ones sterilized grain jars still look clean after a month without any inoculation or maybe even two months? then I see no problem to why one wouldn't be able to wait for say 2 weeks before inoculating? I'm just speaking 'theoretically'.

Next time I PC grain jars I'll save one for 'observation' :takingnotes:

A grain jar is completely different from liquid, and as I said before, a grain jar looking clean is different than being clean. Although I don't want to derail the discussion much, just seeing if anyone has anything solid against >7 day old LC solution.

If everything was killed it may be able to be stored for quite some time without any ill effect, I'm unsure of that.
I just know as time goes on the chance of something taking hold again if its still in there is higher.

My bad I misread..

I would answer this pretty much the same tho. If something can get into the solution in 4-5 days prior to inoculation then what says that it will or won't do that POST inoculation? Would be catastrophic (safe) either way

I try to have a few extra jars of grain and lc at all time. I'll be noccing up some LC that was made on 10/29. Usually don't have issues unless it's my sterile tek.  Same with grain jars.

Made 4 jars 10/29 and nocced up two

They are already on grain.  Will be dropping wedges tomorrow in the other two.

I have lcs from January just chilling they are fine.

The only reason they wouldn't be is grain water lc but even then bacteria struggles to survive in liquids where's as grains it's easier.  Talking about pc here

That’s how I did mine. Sanded around the 1/4 inch hole good, and stuck the sfd’s on with silicone.
