What would happen if...
    #2560836 - 04/14/04 09:16 PM (13 years, 7 months ago)

Just wondering if I could get some predictions of what would happen if I dumped my kit (moss/manure casing over staw substrate) which is just finishing a less-than-expected second flush into a larger container, and mixed the straw and casing together, then left to incubate for a couple days (after picking all shrooms and aborts out, of course) Also, if this would work to grow more mushrooms, would I be better off leaving it as it is, or doing this?

Yes this will work and have done this before. Im sure your aware on how to pasteurize the staw make sure you do that. With anything when you go bulk deeper substrate the shrooms will be larger in size. But flushes depend alot on climate your casing layer was it patched till it colonized the surface same time? I think you should just leave it be and see how second flush is casing can be tricky to get a good flush until you MASTER the casing layer. Do a search on patching

My friend just did the exact same thing you mentioned with one of his casings going on its second flush. He picked out all the aborts then scraped off the verm, then mixed that with a bunch of straw and threw it in the incubator for it to colonize. Will post with results for you if you want.

Thanks for all the help... Just one last questions and I'm done... There's already colonized straw under my current casing... After I'd transferred the casing I'm using now to new straw to colonize it and added another casing to that, would I be able to produce more mushrooms from the already-colonized-caseless-straw if I added a new casing layer and waited for it to colonize, then started a new flush?
