Question about bulk pasteurization of grain
    #25605682 - 11/10/18 04:31 PM (6 years, 2 months ago)

I'm trying to ramp up production without investing in another PC. Do I need to pressure cook a turkey bag full of oats longer than I would pressure cook 10 jars or would 2 hrs at pressure be enough for total pasteurization?  I know it increases the risk of contams to transfer from that bag to jars, but hopefully in front of my flow hood I can avoid any issues.

Turkey bags aren't useful to mycology. They're porous. Ditch that idea.

G2G from bags to jars is stupid. You're doing things backwards.

PC bags that have 4-5 quarts of grain for 3 hours or more.

You sterilize grain, not pasteurize.

I agree. I tried turkey bags once when I ran outta myco bags. Not a great idea, only 3 outta 4 bags survived the PC. I made my own filter for the top but non of them ended up working, they all dried out. Sounds like u should purchase some myco bags  they're super cheap, like 55 cents each and u can fit a ton of grain in a pc that way! I think I can fit 6-8 large myco bags in my 23qt presto. Then u can even g2g those bags into other bags. One bag could probably knock up 4 more which = endless grain spawn

You're right why is he using a flow hood if he just PC'd.  For $75 just get a second cooker if you really need that much extra.  Do grain transfers to recoup the costs of the new cooker.

If u want to use grains, u NEED a PC. No way around it.

Luckily, PCs are relativity inexpensive. Even a small one can be useful. But of course, bigger is better for PCs.

Uh... the turkey bags aren't for spawning, just sterilizing.

I'm not doing g2g, I'm doing a2g, just needed a way to sterilize more grain at a time.

Because I didn't see any responses to this thread, I went ahead and gave it a go.

I PC'd 12 quarts of oats at 15psi for 4 hours (I figured double the weight and less room for the steam, maybe double the cook time) The turkey bag didn't take on any extra water, at least I didn't see any noticeable change in the hydration level of the oats. I sealed it by tying a big chunk of polyfil in the mouth of the bag.  After it had depressurized, I transferred the grain from the turkey bag to 16 sterilized quart jars.  Once the grain had cooled to 80° I inoculated all 16 jars.

Considering how much extra time and care went into transferring from the bag and the extra time in the PC, I'm gonna say definitely not worth it. I think I'll just invest in a second PC.

Yeah, I don’t really even like to G2G in the first place. Don’t get me wrong, I do it, but moving clean grain always makes me nervous. I couldn’t imagine transferring clean grain, colonizing, then doing G2G.

Or cubes growing from a bible. But we’re talking about a procedure, not a funny.

I think RR would agree that PCing grains, and transferring them before inoculating them is not a great method.

And that makes them non-porous? They have holes in them man. They have no place in mycology. Stop ignoring replies and saying nobody helped you.

Bags take longer. You should know that before moving to bags
Turkey bags are a no go. They're not a substitute for spawn bags
You don't pasteurize grain. It needs sterilization.
Bags to jars is backwards.

I think with thanksgiving coming up they have all these materials laying around.  I'm waiting to see if he'll use a turkey baster to dunk cakes.
