Bulk- Layering manure and straw or mixing it up
    #2541326 - 04/08/04 09:44 PM (20 years, 12 days ago)

Do you mix up all the manure and straw with a few jars of spawn?
why?

Do you layer the manure/straw/spawn?
why?

mix it well definately
i top it with a single grain thin layer of grain spawn so the surface colonizes almost overnight.

I say mix it, too, but many people do layer it.

no i would think its more efficent to layer it. The collective will grow stronger/quicker than many individual grains spread out throught a pile of shit.

if you mix the poo/straw mix with the grain in a sperate container you will not only innoculate with the individual grain but the mycelium will break up into individual micropscopic bits that will also serve as innoc. points. Just like shaking grain jars.

i could be way, way off here, but IMO-

there is more linear growth when you layer it

exponential when mixed

feel the shroomentum. it just 'turns' instead of 'runs'

a layer of spawn on the top helps with contams.

i agree with thisone.

powdered brf cakes in the blender make kick ass spawn because the mass of the spawn matters less than number of innoculation points.
when using bulk subs, isn't the idea is to get the nutrition for fruiting from the bulk sub and not from the spawn?

is there something i'm missing?

i like adding 20-30% perlite to grain spawn.
perlite makes grain break up very nice and create more than twice as many innoculation points. grain always breaks into marble sized pieces for me and i end up spooning it out of the jar..i don't know if other people get their grain to break up nice, but i always used to leave mine in the incubator for too long before i found out about perlite and it turned into an unspawnworthy tumor.

perlite colonizes faster than popcorn.

maybe even add perlite to straight rye casings to get the "rez effect"

compost to loosen it up ... quick like.

i like 10-20% coir in compost, added when spawning. and 50/50+ casing is the best.

SO you have to mush it down good too right? Or do you leave it airy?

Are you saying that your top layer is a layer of spawn? How would you know when your myc has spread throughout your bulk substrate if the top is made up of your already colonized spawn immediately after your spawn run? The object is to get the substrate fully colonized to allow for maximum fruiting, not to fruit a very thin layer of spawn that sits on top of your substrate. Perhaps I am misunderstanding you.

a thin top layer will fight off any contams since it will colonize quickly. It is a proven method.

One just waits a few days till the rest is colonized(go by time) and then case...

yea am adding 1perlite/3compost ratio with the perlite nuked at field capacity to my compost when i spawn it. i forget who's idea this is... but its damn good! not only does a given amount of compost with the addition of perlite make .3 times more trays, it fruits much more even and heavy because it holds so much water. i would guess 1/3 heavier total yeild because it increases efficiency of and you can spend the compost in 2 good flushes then time for the contractor bags and a night mission

ok i have a serious question..

how do all you guys and girls who live in apartments(like me) get rid of your contaminated and spent waste?

own dumpster? nah, i live in the worst part of town and the bums go through the trash and know where i live they always ask me for weed for free. plus the garbage man could see what they are and ask the bum if he knows whos garbage it is. this guy talks to everyone outside my place all day long and drinks 12 pack of natty ice everyday.
driving at night? dangerous. dropping off contam jars/bags are hard to explain if busted by anyone who could remember your licence plate down or even a cop. just thinking you're dumping trash or your marijuana garden in black bags in the back seat.

what other options are there?

sometimes i end up taking a night mission once a week to ditch nastys.

oh yeah, i give it 7-10 days before i case it
it looks colonized after only 3 or 4 days because the top layer is solid grain spawn that just needs to recoup.

imo 4-6" beds all take around the same to run, unless its huge which is contam prone and its all lost, and i don't think as efficient even if it doesn't contam. but 10 lb casings gave me in 3rd flushes a few handfuls ,a lb or two some of 120 gram monsters that made me smile.

Can this lead to overlay, and consequential slow colonisation of the casing layer?

I agree that mixing spawn with substrate could in theory increase the number of innoc points and lead to faster growth. However, personally I find it difficult to mix spawn evenly with poo/straw, and often find that the spawn sinks to the bottom during the mixing, so I tend to layer. This is obviously just my way of doing things; if you can get an even distribution of spawn, then by all means mix.

well i guess i layer too by putting some poo in, then spawn , then mixing, then more compost, then spawn, then mixing. i only do that 2 or 3 times at most. also i spawn around 40-50%

I have been having a problem with bulk for a while now. Everything goes along good for a while, but then colonization never finishes and I keep getting green and a few pins SIMULTANEOUSLY! That is frustration, right there. What the hell is the problem? Ive followed roadkills horse poo tek, the store bought poo tek, and a few others. Why dont my trays ever colonize?

I have that exact same problem, green always creeps up on me right after everything starts colonizing and then everything slams to a halt.

Its odd, because my first grow was a homestead ez grow kit.  all it was was a 12 x 6 x 8 little rubbermaid, a bag of "washed cow manure", and a rye bag.  I let it colonize, then broke it up into the manure, closed it, and thats it!  Two weeks later or so, the whole thing was colonized into a tight white brick, and shrooms started popping out.  I have since tried to recreate this simplicity with pasteurized horse poo/straw and a few pf cakes, and even a few rye bags.  I am so confounded at why the results are so different from my first experience, its driving me up a wall.  Please, somebody, help.

if you're using poo and straw, mix it up, even before you pasteurize it.

when you go to spawn, the amount of straw in the mix will determine whether you want to mix or layer. if it's really heavy on the straw, you'll want to layer it, as the spawn has a way of falling through the straw. if it's got enough shit in it, the spawn will stick to it and it's better to mix.

beware of straw though. i wouldn't use it if i didn't have to. it's caused nothing but problems for me.

I feel like the straw may be my problem as well. Im considering worm castings. and I have been mixing pre pasteurization. I also think i need to pack it tighter, but im always afraid of pushing down that hard. Thanks. any other tips?
