Lion's Mane growing in spawn jar. What to do?
    #25605000 - 11/10/18 09:35 AM (6 years, 2 months ago)

Ok so I have 5 spawn jars of Lion's Mane that I colonized from agar using a Lion's Mane LC syringe. I just noticed that there is lions mane growing at the top of the jar but the bottom of the jars isn't even colonized yet. Why did this happen and what did I do wrong? And what do I do now? Do I prepare my substrate and spawn them or do I wait until fully colonized? It's been about 2 weeks since I dropped the agar wedges into the jars. Thanks for any help.

Lion's Mane dors this, it fruits before full colonization. Spawn it to under clean conditions via SAB or FH.

I can spawn it even though the bottom of the jars aren't colonized yet?

Thanks for reply.

If you are careful and do it like a G2G transfer. Don't let the uncolonized grains become contaminated to put it simply.

Lions Mane

Hell, I'd almost say just open the jar and fruit from the jar

Ive tried that, it works, but the uncolonized grains will contaminate and the colonized grains alone will not provide sufficient water supply to produce significant fruits.

Ok guys thanks for the help. This is my first attempt at growing Lion's Mane and I'm trying to figure it out so I can continuously keep growing it using my agar and g2g. I'm gonna go ahead and get my substrate ready and spawn it.

Could a mod move this over to that gourmet and medicinal forum?

Thanks for the suggestion.

You can just let them fruit in the jar. I do this, and take a bit of the mushroom in still sterile conditions to inoculate the next jars. The fruits will be small compared with what you get if you spawn though.

I tried to fruit some Lions mane out of the jar a while back.

I got some smaller fruits, but they tasted kind of funky... A little sour, definitely not how they're suppose to taste.

At the time I assumed it was because my jar had no wood, and the spawn being 100% rye grain, created the funky taste.

(I'm a noob Lions mane grower, so it could have been coincidence I suppose )

Anyway, I'd suggest mixing the spawn with some wood chips if possible.

Just my :twocents:

If they're tasting sour it sounds like bacterial contam (mine taste how they should). But i agree, spawning is preferable.
