A few beginner questions:
    #2560432 - 04/14/04 06:57 PM (13 years, 3 months ago)

Hey everyone,
I've been considering growing shrooms for a long time, and I recently ordered spores that arrived today, woohoo! (that's after having an order disappear somewhere in the postal system last ~october )
Anyway, I've read the basic teks a few times and I'm pretty confident about almost everything, except:
1) I'm a student and I go home some weekends.  How can I set up an easy system for keeping my terranium humid, and with sufficient oxygen for 2-3 day periods when I won't be around to manually mist and fan?
2) I can't find canning jars anywhere, where I live.  Can I just use standard drinking glasses with makeshift alu foil lids?  Are there any drawbacks or things I should look out for if I do?
3) Like I said, I'm a student so I don't have a whole lot of money to buy a pressure cooker - have you had much success using just a regular pot on a cooker?
These are kinda covered in the docs on the site, but I guess I'm just looking for some reassurance
Thanks a lot,
JohnnyJ

1. Yes, check out the PMP (poor mans pod) setup, its great. (THANKS Magash!)

2. You can find canning cars, youre just not looking well. Check out the supermarkets, homedepot, walmart, etc... you should not have a problem, especially because its spring time.

3. I was at walmart last night and found one for $18. I think you can afford that... and they are not required but you really really should have one.

1) PMP - http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat...;o=&fpart=1

2) If you live in the US, you should be able to find canning jars, or you can order them very cheaply off the net. If you really can't find them, drinking glasses with foil lids can be used, but are fidly. If you don't mind wasting a few bux, you can use regular jars and just break them when the cakes are ready to get them out whole. You can just wash jars from food and use them

3) Hit ebay for cheap pressure cookers. Steam sterilisation ( a pot on the stove ) is acceptable for the pf tek, but you'll inevitibly have to put up with higher levels of contamination.

about fanning, buy a cheap air thing for a fish tank and stick it in one of the corners of your terrarium.

good luck!

Umm for instead of a pressure cooker just heat up water in a pot bring it to boil for an hour and leave whatever you steralize in there. You do not need a pressure cooker but it significantly reduces time.

Thanks for all replies,
I'm in Ireland, so no Walmart, k mart or any other mart except cattle and sheep mart!
I'll see if I can find a cheap pressure cooker, but I'm not too optimistic. I also considered using non tapered jars and breaking them when done, I'll see how it compares to other options price-wise.
I'll check out that PMP now,
Thanks again,
JohnnyJ

That cattle and sheep mart is some funny shit! LOL Laughin with ya bro I grew up in the country too and know how difficult it can be to get things other people take for granted. On the bright side it sounds like you are surrounded by good substrate though, and you wouldnt believe how many people come on here singin the blues about not being able to get cow shit.
I think that if you search and find info on using a casing method, after you have broken a few jars and got the hang of the pf tek, you will be able to just break up the colonized cake in the jar with a sterile spoon or something and use it to spawn some o' that cow poo you got around. This will save the jars and give you better results.
----Good luck Im sure you will figure out a way to make it work!!

I bought tapered glasses today, and I'll use alu foil lids. I also bought some jam jar "transparent covers, waxed circles, rubber bands and self adhesive labels", just cause I saw it and thought it might be useful.
I searched for PMP and Poor Mans Pod and still didn't find what I was looking for :-/ But I won't need to make my teranium for a couple of weeks anyway - plenty of time to find out more.
One more question;
What kind of water do you all use in your substrate cakes? Is using tap water dangerous/dumb in any way?
And Mykey, yes I got plenty of cowshit!

Tap water is just fine, provided that the water in your area doesn't have particularly high levels of minerals (cloudy is bad). You can use any kinda spring or mineral water if your tap water isn't very good.

Poor Man's Pod is here:

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat...;o=&fpart=1

and here

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat...rt=all&vc=1

remember to adjust the date range when you search

Thanks OdiumJunkie,
I was searching faq's and doc's I think, rather than the forums (It was pretty late last night, so I dunno what I was doing tbh!)
I know I'm asking a lot of questions here, but:
What's geolite?
Does the pump just suck out "old" air and pump it through the airstones? (I don't really know what airstones are or how they work, but I've heard them mentioned a lot in relation to hydro pot setups)
Thanks again,
JohnnyJ

The airpump is an aquarium airpump. It sucks in fresh air from outside and pumps it into the terrarium through tubes (usuall two). In order to distribute the air evenly in the terrarium, an airstone is attached to the end of each tube. It's a pourus stone that goes under the water and is covered by geolite. The air being pumped in under the water through the airstones also helps raise humidity. Airstones can be bought at pet shops along with airpumps.

No "old" air is sucked out, just having fresh air pumped in is sufficient to combat the buildup of C02

Hydroleca is a lightweigh clay aggregate consisting of small pourus clay particles. In the UK, it's often called "hydroleca" or "hortag". It can be found at garden centers and hydroponic stores, it's used as a surface bedding for pots and used to raise the humidity of greenhouses. If you can't find any, perlite can be substituted, but isn't as good.

Just found a good UK source for hydroleca if you can't find it:

http://www.queenswood.co.uk/acatalog/ind...amp;CatalogBody

They deliver internationally, I don't know how much postage to Ireland will be though.

Hope this helps.

So, it's 4:40am, the cakes are finally cooking downstairs.
I made a lot of noise with aluminum foil and pots and pans, but none of my non-shrooming housemates woke up thankfully!
One of them gets up between 6 and 7, I hope he doesn't need to use any pots to make breakfast, they're all gonna be cooling in my room!

Seriously though, save up for a pressure cooker. I "borrowed" a pressure cooker from a relative since I started and I can't emphasize this enough, it takes all the guesswork out of sterilization. I have had zero contam problems whatsoever since I've started.

I'll have one the next time I'm sterilising jars. I want to get this "crop" underway asap, cause I'll probably be moving outta this house at the end of May.
How long does it usually take you to get 1st flush, and how long after that until 2nd etc.?
