A story about a rookie.

About 2 months ago a friend of a friend started thinking that he might want to try his hand at growing mushrooms. So, after doing a ton of research on mycology, and cultivation, and reading countless TEKS on this site and others, he decided he would give it a go. Having collected all of the supplies, he built a small mycology lab in a closet that wasn't being used. He then installed a modified version of a monotub. He used the pf tek and made 2 BRF cakes(accidentally used 1 pint jars instead of 1/2 pint), then inoculated using 1cc of spore solution. He realised that this may have been too little for the size of the jars, but figured that if it fails to colonize at least he will have saved some spore solution. He put the 2 jars in a homemade incubator and his expectations are low but his hopes are high. About 2 weeks go by and the jars are colonizing but by this time, they are only about 50-55% colonized and one of them had contaminated with green mold (probably due to being too excited during inoculation). He threw out the contaminated jar. The other jar is not contaminated as of the next few days so he decided to keep it in the incubator. By 3 and a half weeks after inoculation, the friend of a friend is pleased to see that colonization is complete and he is one step closer. After letting the jar consolidate/ dunking and rolling, he popped the cake into the modified monotub FC and was proud of having made it that far.((Especially knowing that he started with zero experience and only a limited knowledge on cultivating mushrooms. And on top of that he made modifications on his first attempt which is not recommended for a rookie.)) Over the next week the cake pins and the fruits quickly grew to maturity. He harvested when he realised the larger fruits had opened up and broken their veil. The harvest was 17.6 grams wet. So, as a rookie he was very happy to have succeeded his first attempt at cultivating such a wonderfully complex organism, and was able to reap what he sow. He dunked and rolled the cakes, gave them 2 days in incubator to re-consolidate, and popped them back into the FC. That brings us to today, the cake is showing pins again and the friend of a friend is excited for a second flush.
He asked me to share this story with the hope that he could get some opinions on his set up as he has a few concerns
1- the modified monotub. The TEK he read called for a 60 qt tub, but the one he is using is much smaller.(37 quart). His concern is if this will have to be switched to a larger tub, as space is an issue.
2-the incubation system. Again, the tek he read for making one of those called for 2 tubs. 1 inside the other, the lower one having a fish tank heater in water and the other partly submerged into it to heat the top half. But he used a 3 drawer plastic side table, wrapped the back and sides with plastic and then filled the bottom with water and a tank heater and he used the drawer above it as the "incubator" Will this have to be changed?
3- lighting. He uses an 18 inch reptisun Uvb tube bulb suspended above the FC and has it on a cycle of 12 hrs on/off. Is this too much uvb light?
4-the harvest. 17.6 wet grams from a single 1 pint cake. Is that average, above or below average? What can he do to boost his harvest?
EXTRA INFO- the strain that was being grown was Golden Teacher. temps and humidity inside the incubator
Temp and humidity inside the FC
FINAL QUESTION- do these conditions need to be changed for this specific strain?

Pictures would be nice. Packing more cakes closer together can help yield more fruits, You should be able to get 2-4g dried from a single cake given optimal conditions. Don’t ever beat yourself up over a successful grow, especially your first one. It is most certainly a learning curve, and each time you will see better results. Try making as many cakes as you can and packing them in your SGFC. I would love to see your first fruits. Feel free to drop a pic.

Thank you for the reply, I will tell him to make as many cakes as he can for the next attempt. Would you recommend continuing with brf or switching to grain? I hear grain produces far better and more fruits but is a little bit harder to sterilize and work with. I will edit the original post and add pictures immediately after posting this reply [edit] PICS ARE NOW IN ORIGINAL POST
