Temperature for Grain Spawn??
    #25579663 - 10/30/18 07:51 PM (5 years, 2 months ago)

HI!
I've ordered my 1st grow kit from Shroom Supply and am planning to inject the grain bags tomorrow.
What is the ideal temperature for spawing B+ and Golden Teacher?
I'm guessing I need to run a space heater to keep the temp regulated.
Is a humidifier necessary for this stage?
This is my first time growing and any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Humidifier not used at this stage.  They just need a warm place to grow out.

I don't think many people ever use one unless you are trying to grow in a tent or something, or possibly looking to set up automation schemes.

Old grow guides used to recommend 80F for colonization, but most people are doing it cooler now it seems.  I'd keep it in the 70s anyways.

Room temp (73-75) works fine for me.  Admittedly, I haven't tried experimenting with temp controls though.

Grow kits are fine, but hopefully you love the hobby so much that you buy your own equipment and keep it going.

When I started a few years ago, I was following some outdated info. I thought I needed to make an incubator to colonize my jars at over 90 degrees F.  but this simply isn't necessary and it almost always led to bacterial blooms in my jars/bags.

Room temp is fine. I keep mine in a warm part of the house that is always in the mid 70's, but they can colonize at even lower temps. it will just take longer. Lower temps means less chance of contamination.

You don't need a humidifier for colonization. Maybe for fruiting depending on what type of fruiting chamber you build.

Have fun! And don't skip any steps! Be as clean and thorough as possible and you shouldn't have any problems.

Thanks Everyone for the info.
I'm growing in my garage and the low is around 60 degrees at night but can be up to 80 in the day this time of year.
I'm in no major rush so if lower temps take a little longer to colonize but are less likely to get contaminated I'm good with that.
I inoculated the grain bags today and will post pics as soon as I see a change. Fingers crossed.
Happy Halloween!

I use a $40 heated blanket for incubation. it's a twin sized heating pad.. I prefer to incubate at 80F-85F for quick colonization... My G2G are fully colonized in 8 days.

:syringe:
I'm stressing that I skipped a very crucial step... I didn't put a flame to the needle before I injected into the self healing port of the grain bags.
I did use the alcohol swab to wipe down the port and the needle each time and it was a brand new syringe with a sterile needle...
Heating blanket seems like a very good idea @halfemptyjosh
Do you put it directly underneath the grow bags?

Very important step indeed.  Why put the bags out in your garage?  A closet in your house is just fine.  No blanket needed.

Weirdly so, alcohol can harbour contaminants. If it's a medical grade swab, then you may be ok. Only way to know for sure is wait and see.

@weaviewonder
Most of my creative endeavors happen in my garage so I think it was just a force of habit.
Do you think it would be wise to move them or will I disturb / disrupt the process?

It was medical grade swabs. My fingers are crossed and I'm hoping for the best.
No visible changes in the grain bags yet... trying to decide if I should move them to a closet indoors or if that will disrupt the process.

I believe contaminants increase around the 81-83 degree mark. Keep it under that. The humidity outside the container is irrelevant at this stage.

HI Everybody.
It's been 7 days and no sign of growth in any of the grain bags.
I injected 2 ccs per bag...
I did read that it can take a little longer to appear in a bag than a jar because you inject into the middle of the grain.
I have a tendency to be impatient and I imagine the answer is going to be that it just takes as long as it takes... BUT I thought I'd ask a few questions...

How long does it usually take?
I'd say that now they are in the closet its pretty much room temp.
Should I add heating blanket to speed it up?
And if so, do you put the bags on top of the heating pad or just put the pad near them or rig it above them?

Is this 1st inoculation step invisible at first and then all of a sudden you see a change?

If the spores I injected (half the bags were injected with B+ and the other half Golden Teacher) don't take can I buy more syringes and use the same bags?

Any and all thoughts and ideas are greatly appreciated.

You can inject towards the glass for easier viewing. I usually see visible white growth in a week.

If you injected in the middle in may take 2 weeks before you see the growth break to the glass.

I’ve used the grow kit many times because it works well, alongside other projects.
When you inoculate you don’t donanything besides the obvious flame sterilization or needle and ssntize the bag really good. Sit it in a dark place with temps between 65-75F.
Wait for full colonization break them up and mix your sub.
There is no need for humidifier what so ever with this kit. Just keep proper temps.
However you will need to poke holes 2inches above substrate after it is fully colonized and you put to fruiting. The only real problem with this kit is during fruiting in the myco bags which is FAE.
I suggest you make those holes when you put to fruit or you will be disappointed when the myc chokes and struggles for air. Just mist and fan 4-5 times a day and you will be fine.
Keep the temps around 70ish and keep near a window unless you’re using artificial lighting.
Good luck man.

I’ve never had that long of a wait time before with this kit, usually after 3-4 days there is visible growth. However putting 2cc in a single bag throws off the moisture content and can stall growth.
I’ve gotten away with putting 0.5 cc in a bag before with the last bit of a syringe.
1cc is perfectly fine with these bags. Did you make sure to break the spore clumps in your syringe before inoculation?

Also make sure your substrate is put in a refrigerator or something to keep the proper moisture content.
