Poisonous mushrooms in cow fields?
    #25593553 - 11/05/18 10:02 AM (5 years, 4 months ago)

Hello

Am new to hunting mushrooms and looking for a variety of mushrooms now. Im just wondering if there grows any known poisonous mushrooms on cow fields where liberty caps are known to be present and that can maybe be mistaken for liberty caps? Specially where there is low grass. Its not the end of the world if you dont get a trip from mistaken mushroom but risk getting ill would be really bad. What to look out a bit extra? thanks

Depends on your location. Also I don't think there are any deadly lookalikes, but you should always identify before you eat something.

if location is in sweden how is it then? I read that Mycena can be poisonous and be mistaken for Psilocybe semilanceata

Post the mushrooms here first, but no, there isn't really anything toxic out there that looks like a liberty cap.  There are some questionable Mycena and Galerina that look similar, but no one seems to be eating them or getting sick from them.

My understanding of the galerinas is that it's the wood-lovers that are killers, which means the sphagnum- and grass-lovers you see in the fields next to libs are not toxic. I think the same is true of mycenas. That said, you should NEVER eat either species just in case.

It should be very easy to distinguish both from liberty caps, even for a novice hunter: mycenas are typically grey with white gills, and galerinas have gills, cap, and stipe the same color (at least, the lawn galerinas I've observed), where libs have a yellow to brown cap (hygrophanous, will look different when wet) and dark gills, with a robust stipe that doesn't usually go straight and that can be wrapped around your finger if you go slowly. The umbo is very distinctive on the liberty cap as well, something I don't recall seeing on lawn galerinas. The separable pellice is a very telling sign as well... neither of the two you're worried about have that. Learn what to watch out for and you'll spot the galerinas and mycenas without even having to get on your knees to examine them up close.

That might be the case.  I've never heard of Galerina poisonings from outside of the G. marginata group.  The vast majority of Galerina species are these little mycenoid things that most people don't pay much attention to.

Are any of them even tested for toxin content?

Hey Svampson,

I was out for a pick today and I saw some little brown galerinas growing alongside some libs (very common occurrence for me, BTW). I took this pic so you can see the clear differences between them. The red circle contains libs (albeit dry ones) and the white circle contains some LBMs that are likely galerinas.
