A helping hand with some trays
    #25425585 - 08/31/18 07:15 AM (6 years, 4 months ago)

Ok so this was my first stab at cultivating the sacred mushroom. Let me run you through my process

I received a P.cubensis cambodia print that I believe to be at least 5 years old. First impressions were that the print was very faint/small. Alas it was used to make up a 10ml syringe in a SAB. 6 WBS jars were inoculated, then left and forgotten (except the odd peak) in dark a cupboard for at least 2-3  months. Growth was very slow and 2 jars were lost to contamination. After this extended period of colonisation only 3 jars showed any strong mycelial growth, eventually seeming to cease in growth at all. 1 jar reached full colonisation, another stalled and stopped at ~90% and the 3rd reached ~50%.

I then spawned the colonised parts of the jars (roughly a quart in total) at a 1:3 ratio of spawn: substrate in 2 trays. I believe this was an error and feel this low spawn:substrate ratio slowed colonisation and resulted in contamination of the trays. Or the jars were contaminated from the get go?

After spawning, growth seemed to be going well in one tray up for about 2 weeks then it stalled. After 3 weeks from spawning the tray seemed stuck in its tracks and a lot of metabolites had accumulated. The other tray had stalled at about 20% and didn’t go any further.

At this point I was pretty sure the trays were gone for. I had nothing to lose though, and as an experiment I tried to fruit them adding waxpaper to induce pinning. Unfortunately the wax paper actually dissolved or the mycelium ate through it by the next time I checked . I replaced wax paper with thin plastic and left for a few days. No pinning was observed and a small pink mould took hold.  The stronger tray has been in the sgfc for 9 days now with regular misting/fanning and has produced no pins. Can someone tell me if the tray is irreparable or if I can squeeze some fruits out of it. Gut instinct tells me I've completely wasted my time

If these trays could talk I fear they’d curse me for creating them so poorly and then ask me to put them out of their misery.

I appreciate anyone who actually had the patience to read my seem to be my failed experiment. Would I be correct in blaming contam for stalling/slow growth or could this be due to shit genetics in the MS or both?

Also in regards to a colonising substrate, will contamination completely throw out the possibility of future fruiting?

On a side note some of the uncolonised grains remaining in one of the jars I spawned became very active after spawning the other half of the jar (rapidly colonised to 100%). I made a mini tray at a 1:1ish ratio which has been colonising for 14 days now only being uncovered 3 times for peaking. Is this tray at 100%?  If so my plan is to apply a casing layer of (60:40 verm:coir) wait for 20-30% colonisation of the casing layer then into the SGFC.

Here is the mini tray with flash/no flash:

Well if anyone is reading this, the experiment failed. But since then I've managed to fruit a monotub with cleaner spawn, so pity is not due. Although I do shed a tear remembering the lack of input on this thread from my fellow mycologists in my time of need.

Hey Mr.Mong.  That is a lot of detail and people tend to skip over the big posts.

Contam definitely will slow things down.  Prints are contaminated.

I’m a noob but I am very confident when I say, learn to use agar.  You’ll have many more successes if your transferring out contams.

Congrats on your fruited mono tub.

Pity isn’t a big thing in here so get yourself back in the game and don’t take it personal.

Hey Sunny. I appreciate the response, I guess I was too thorough with explaining my situation. Looking back at this previous experiment, it only added fuel to my obsession with this little fungus.

I've wanted to grow psychedelic mushrooms for a VERY long time but never had the opportunity. So I've got to say, when I saw that first pin a few weeks back my heart skipped a beat. Here's some of the Cubes I harvested today alongside some Liberty Caps I also picked today, in some sort of mushroom orgy.

I've been reading a lot about agar and actually made up some plates a few weeks back ready to clone a star performer on the next monotub. I'll keep you posted with my results

Hi There! Sorry that people were too lazy to read your post. I hope you aren't discouraged from giving it another go.

My input is that whenever things are this strenuous, something went really wrong. Probably right from the beginning. If you aren't ready for agar, get a spore syringe from a reputable sponsor here on the site. I order from mushrooms.com and have had no contams.

Also, did you sterilize your WBS in a good pressure canner? If prepped properly, it really shouldn't take 2 -3 months for colonization. One of the benefits to grain spawn is that you can break it up. So when the jar is 1/3 colonized, you can shake up the jar and spread that mycelium around for faster growth.

Once birthed, they shouldn't take longer than 2 weeks to colonize the bulk sub. The fact that they took so long and produced metabolites means that they were fighting off a bacterial contamn most likely.

I would say next time maybe try a clean syringe instead of a print. Follow completely sterile technique. Swtich to 1/2pint BRF jars if you want to try an easier Tek for starting out.

You spawned incompletely colonized grains.  I think your grains were contaminated and you're just new to this and don't have the eye for picking out hard to see contamination.

For the record. There was nothing to be done for that tray other than to put it outside.  One look at it and I could tell the chances of fruiting were slim. I'm glad you took another shot at it.

Most of the experienced cultivators here can look at 1 or 2 pictures and know exactly what's wrong so the wall of text is unnecessary. We look at a lot of posts every day and some slip through the cracks.  Usually it's best to post pictures and let the cultivators ask for more details. Don't be afraid to PM people and reach out if you feel like you're not getting help!

Awesome Mr.Mong!  Glad you give it another go.  I am so bad at looking at those pics but Elastical and other TCs are amazing at it.  Definitely reach out to them.
