How good a humidifier IS perlite, anyway :)

Well I'd like to graduate from cubes, and also grow stuff that doesn't blow my mind when I eat it. :wink: And well, our lovely cubes are so nice to be CO2 resistant, unlike pretty much everything else. It seems clear that we need high humidity AND good air exchange for stuff like oysters or lions mane, whether it's pods or bags or anything. Since I don't quite want to set up a full Martha quite yet, I'm thinking a large plastic tote with forced ventilation.

I'm thinking of drilling the bottom (only the bottom) shotgun style, putting a 12V blowout fan on top somewhere, and filling it with fully hydrated (and daily rehydrated) perlite say one-third up... That should move air, adding oxygen so the shrooms won't deform, and as air moves up through the perlite layer, hydrate it too...

The question is, how much. Are there any rules of thumb for sizing the airflow and the thickness of the perlite layer to get above 95% humidity around the bags / pods on top? Or is using an active humidifier inescapable if airflow is forced?

(I've got 60-65% RH in my apartment normally BTW, so it's not like I need to hydrate all the way up from 40%.)

Just build a normal SGFC and put trays in it. Or do trays/cut-off bags in a monotub. No need to reinvent anything.

I'm worried oysters will get oxygen-deprived coral-like without active ventilation. CO2 seems to be an unavoidable issue with all passive solutions.

Oysters need a lot more FAE than other species, and as such are grown differently to cubes. I'm not sure you're going to get the FAE you need with a fan pushing up perlite. You may want to ask this thread be moved to the Gourmet forum.
