Does this manure look good?
    #25591880 - 11/04/18 03:09 PM (6 years, 2 months ago)

I took two small bags. One fresher and the other one more what I am expecting to be more what I want. Is this good to pasteurize and spawn to?

you need field aged manure not fresh.

Actually, what you want to use is field aged manure.  This is horse or cow manure that's been sitting out in the sun and rain for a few months.  It will smell like grass and break up easily without getting your hands dirty.  It's not just about drying, it's about aging.  You want all the ammonia smell to be gone from the manure before use.  If it were me, I'd go back to the stables and collect manure from the field, rather than the barns or what they sweep/shovel out of the stalls.

If other mushrooms are fruiting in the manure, I'd spread it around your flowerbeds as fertilizer and get some more for mushroom growing.

Is the first bag good then? There is fresh to years old where I got it. The first pic is how I imagined correctly aged manure would look.

no dude. like dried out by the sun fully. field aged manure has no smell like fresh shit. no urea smell. fully dried with no inner water content.

Disclaimer: First off I am writing this guide/pictorial because after countless hours of research I've never been able to find a good source of information WITH PICTURES. Now I will not be going to in depth as to which poo is better and for what reason, there are plenty of posts that cover this already, I will simply be making a list of several samples of cow poo in there various stages of field aging and what I typically use.

Second Disclaimer: The following cow poo you are about to see is 100% grass fed and untreated. This is quite often not the case so please don't come back saying you used a patty you found in a field and nothing grew on it so it's my fault. Many farmers treat their fields to parent fungus from growing

I will first start off with Poo that is too fresh

As you can see this poo is probably only a few days to a week old and not anywhere near where we want it to be. If you see a lot of this poo lying around your probably in an active pasture. My advice is find a field that has poo but no cows

This next poo has probably been drying for 1-2 weeks.

Again this poo is probably to moist, however feel free to take this and continue drying it out at home by laying it on your yard is an area with plenty of sunshine

Next up we have some pretty decent looking poo. As you can see it is a consistent light brown color across the entire patty.

This is some really good stuff and will break up into an almost dirt like substance with little effort (I use a 3lb hammer to break it up)

Next up we begin to hit some of the older field aged parties. These are usually much harder to come across but well worth the effort.
Yea
As you can see it's turned from a brown to a tan, this is due to what I've always assumed is firefang (please correct me if I'm wrong here). Mushies love this stuff however when using manure this old many of the nutrient have already been consumed so you may need to add a few extra. Here is another example, with a little more consistent color.

I hope this thread gives you a little insight into my world of cow poo. Now this is not a complete list and I have purposely left out white poo because I do not like it use it, just my personal position. Feel free to make any corrections if need be. Also once I have a solid producing ISO I will  conduct a comparison grow using these different aged manure.

Thanks for reading,
Ex

I get the super dry horse manue, field aged well and poor booiling water over it in a five gallon buckets and cover
Let sit over night then blend with a paint mixer in a industrial drill. But i still end up with clumps that dont like to colonize very well by the pan tropical mycelium
I'm not trying to pasteurize the manure, I just want to break it up as I pressure cook the manure and coir in bags to inoculate in front of my flow hood

What processes do you use with hourse manuer to break it up

I use a gas powers weed wacker and an 18 gallon plastic storage tote.

Next though, I'll be getting a woodchipper to shred manure, wheat straw, and branches with.  A woodchipper would make it viable for me to get back into using field aged cow manure.

Hmm this might work well, ive got a 25 gallon galvanized tub ill try this in

It just rained so it is all wet. the older bag doesnt seem to smell, but I will get even older looking stuff.

Edit: Looking at those pictures of horse manure and my bag I think it is good. The picture I took is not the clearest.
