ID req: Possible Gymnopilus sp. on live RED oak?

Habitat: In Maryland, the central piedmont close to Virginia and DC.In the base of live red oak in a dimpled area, facing north. I wondered if the dimple might indicate decaying wood...I've never found Gyms and I was surprised a live tree might have them, thought they were all about decaying wood.
Gills: A tad lighter than the yellow/orange of the caps. Adnate on the small/medium ones, Decurrent on the very large ones.
Stem: From 1cm on the little ones to perhaps as long 12cm on the big ones. Diameter was ~1cm to maybe as much as 4-5cm. Thick and solid, as far as I could tell
Cap: Diameter of 1.5cm to as much 10-15cm. The color was an interesting yellow-orange, very different from the armillarias, jack-o-lanterns, boletes, etc. I have seen before. I do think there were scales. The cap shape changed with the size. Small/medium the cap's edge's curved sharply downwards. The large ones seemed to have become more flattened with some undulation and less of dome-like shape.
Spore print color: Orange with a brownish tone.
Bruising: I think the smallest ones got a greenish-blue bruising.
Other information: These were fairly pungent, perhaps in 'bitter' way. The large ones were over-run with bugs, I disposed of them as soon as I saw them inside. I found these about a month ago at the beginning of October. I've worried a bit that I've thrown the color with my photog skills+use of a phone camera. I'm certainly NOT eating these, as they've been thrown away, but I'd love some guidance as to what they might be. My current guess is gymnopilus luteoviridis due to the seemingly live wood, but I'm a total noob with gyms.

Anyone get any ideas? I'm having trouble finding a non-gymnopilus that seems even vaguely possible, but I'm a total Gym neophyte, so I'm unsure.

I’m no expert but they look like gyms to me and blue green bruising is a good indicator of an active gym. Good luck I’m sure a trusted identifier will chime in shortly

Looks like a gymnopilus species to me, are they bitter or mild tasting? I'm betting on bitter.

Any chance these are them too? A local professor found some in the general area, but haven't asked him for exact locations. Not best pictures. I usually try to hurry with stuff like this if I am not alone.

I'm afraid I didn't try them and didn't get this post up and get an ID in time to do so before the pins and the medium-sized ones went bad. They smelled somewhat bitter and bark-like. This is kind of rough, but the closest smells where like a loamy soil mixed with either cassia bark or sassafras.
I wonder if the two clusters might be different species? The big ones were over 8cm across, perhaps close to 12-15cm, pointing to junonius, AFAIK. But it sounds like they show up only on dead stumps and logs, hence my original guess of luteoviridis, which seems to grow on live hardwoods.
There are a lot of those red oaks nearby, but I haven't seen similar mushrooms on other trees. I photograph a lot of mushrooms on walks and looking through last year's photos, I think I found a case where I might have seen the same species on the same tree. Might the tree be likely to produce again?
