I know a lot of us are hindered by our surroundings or our equipment and some even by the teks and information we receive as beginners. I know I am.
I’m just curious as I’m feeling disappointed and discouraged by my attempts. Although I’m happy to say I have learned a lot and will continue trying. I think I would be a bit more successful if I wasnt so hindered by people, scheduling, space, time and equipment. I’m hoping to make a move next year that will help.
What’s your experience in the first 3-6 months of your cultivation process?
I found "let's grow mushrooms" on YouTube and followed the directions in the video exactly and grew my first crop of mushrooms (about 1 ounce from 5 cakes) on my first try. I steamed my jars for 2 hours instead of 90 minutes to be sure they were sterile.
Following the directions exactly was the key to my success.
I kept reading and reading and finally came across damien5050's elementary coir tek (now known as the bucket tek) and bought a pressure cooker.
I literally thought about mushrooms ALL THE TIME. Constantly thinking about the growing process and how it works helped me grasp concepts like fresh or exchange, surface humidity, evaporation, etc.
I would literally try to picture the molecules of water and how they were arranged on the surface and how the air molecules interacted with the water.
Just trying to visualize everything about the growing process down to the tiniest detail was the key to my success.
My first major failure came when I built and incubator and all my jars went moldy and bacterial even after 2 hours in the pressure cooker.
After that I said no more spore syringes. Everything is prints and petri dishes from now on.
After my first round growing from my own prints I knew I finally had it. I felt like I could grow a thousand pounds if I wanted to.
Then I taught my girlfriend how to grow. That process completely reinforced all my understanding.

My first attempt was a failure because of sterilization issues without a PC.
My second attempt was agar and was successful but not perfect.
My third attempt has been agar to agar and agar to BRF. I didn’t filter the lid and had a mishap with the jars tipping in the PC so I’m almost certain it’s gonna be a failure. The agar to agar I’m sure will be successful though.
A lot of my problems are because of my attempts to hide what I’m doing and although it’s safely hidden I get an unnecessary amount of paranoia and get flustered and excited in my attempts.
Oh well I’m learning.

I did PF Tek first and steamed most of my jars. 23/24 germinated and colonized without a contam. Before they were done flushing, I tossed 'em to make room for bulk. This was in my 2nd month of starting, I think. I bought a PC and sterilized grain for my first mono, as well as bottles with grain + CVG, both of which I inoculated with LI. Both were successful.

These pics were taken on 12/22/14 and 1/11/2015, 84 and 104 days after my registration date when I first started. So pretty fast. You can see some of the leftover cakes in the bottles before I removed the SGFC to get going on tubs. I was very immersed in everything at once, took tons of notes on every cultivation method I could, and spent TONS of time researching. Even with my personal research, I was extremely active in the forums, asking a million questions and graciously receiving answers.
I don't know how common it is for someone to be successful right off the bat with both PF Tek and bulk, but it's very far from impossible, especially if you take it seriously. It sounds like you've isolated your initial issues. If you need help, just detail your process exactly and more experienced folks can help correct your mistakes. You can do this, brah. Don't get frustrated.

Agar

Media bottle with soft agar. Transfer agar wedge inside. It sits on top. You can check for contam like regular agar.

Shake bottle. Bubbles provide oxygen and surface area for growth.

Very fast.

It is definitely possible to be successful the first time with pf and bulk.
Some people don't grasp the asceptic technique or sterilization right away. I really tried to visualize the air currents in my mind and the "chain of custody" so to speak when it comes to what you touch and how contams get transfered from one place to another. That's something some people just never thought about before but when I was a kid I was really sick and had a weakened immune system for a few months and I had to be very aware of what I came in to contact with.

My first ~80g dry from the cakes never provided enough for a trip, even 13g at once provided no visuals. I ended up writing instead while dealing with body load.
Lots has changed since, even without psychedelic experience. It absolutely still changed my life into something much more disciplined.
I'm eager to try
I look forward to inspired visualization, tiger. That sounds like a lot of fun!
If not for the complete failure to trip on my first grow, I'd not have tried so hard my second round. I wanted everything perfect.

I think most of my problems have been stupid mistakes caused by time constraints, over eagerness, sheer bad luck and anxiety about getting caught by housemates.
I really understand the processes involved but have a hard time getting it right but not because of my environment, I really need to move to a less crowded area.

100 times. Especially if your younger. You cant trust those fucks anyway. By that, I mean you cant trust anyone. Only 2 other people know my situation and thats my wife and a life long friend.
All it takes is some asshole roommate who doesn't like you for any dumb reason and wants to get you out of the house. BAM thats an easy out. Plus, those people are afraid of going to jail because their roommate made bad choices. You have to look at it from their point of view.

I feel like I just read a rockstar's autobiography. Hall of fame post right here. I too obsessed and visualized every element of the process, I still do when staring at my subs and plates and jars and whatnot.

They would be upset but not as much as you’d think. I just don’t want to explain it to them.

I’m almost 30, I don’t trust them 100% but they wouldn’t rat me out. I’ve lived with them for four years and I’ve learned enough to know that they do NOT want a raid on their house plus they’re all older folks and for the most part keep to themselves but they can be a bit nosey when I do something unusual however I’m also brewing beer in their kitchen recently so it kinda gives me an excuse for a PC and sterilization. It’s really the using of the PC that makes me weirded out, lol.
I’m kinda quiet and stay out of their way so when I start doing something strange I feel paranoid about them getting nosey, I think it’s more in my mind.

I've never shared this with anyone but...
A long time ago I needed money so I rented out my spare room. The guy I rented from seemed really chill. During the first week I shared my hobby with him. At first he thought it was really cool and even tripped with me.
After the trip though he realized that he wanted the apartment to be a place where his kids could come visit. He told me he'd be moving out at the end of the first month.
I understood. But I was sweating bullets for a few months and took a break because I was worried he would betray me. As far as I know though, he never did.
Will not do that again. If Iive with anyone it's complete honesty before anyone moves in.

DO NOT LET YOUR GAURD DOWN WITH PEOPLE WHEN IT COMES TO DOING ANYTHING ALONG THESE LINES.
As a teen I was open with friends and family about many of my illicit Hobby's like small scale marijuana growing, wine making, my moonshine still, seed extractions, un approved fire works making, mushroom growing, banned pets, all kinds of things you name it I probably dabbeled in it. ..
Bottom line no matter who you are or hold old you are I don't care anyone can sell you down the river if they could save their ass, especially friends, roommates, and coworkers even if you have known that person your entire life still beware. Friends have stolen, family has called cops, girlfriends tell friends, just know this before you pick up something like this, cause no one will take a sentence for you. Overall I wish you the best but I've learned to not be attached to anything that can cause trouble unless I have full control. I gave up mushroom cultivation for over 2 years because I didn't have control of the outcome of the situation living with others.
I don't hate my family, just can't trust them . I have shrunk my friends down to VERY few because of how most friends and room mates have big mouths and will do anything to save their ass. Look at what you want to get into no matter what it is and weigh the odds anything less than 100% sercure is not safe for me
