Reishi Mini-Log Grow

Do you guys think I could take a small birch log from my local craft store and inoculate it with a couple of wood-lover plugs like those of ganoderma lucidum and get it to colonize and fruit indoors as if it were a full-sized log, outdoors? If I was to create it's preferred environment of course. I'm talking a really small, like 3"x3" (diameter-height), dried birch log. If at all possible I know I'd have to hydrate and sterilize it but I'm not sure if anything necessary isn't present in a dry log compared to a fresh one that might prohibit growth. Also if it is possible how should I go about hydration, sterilization, and inoculation specifically?
I'm thinking halving the dowels, pre-drilling the holes, one through the top and maybe two or three through the circumference lower than the depth of the top hole, putting it in an oven bag or even a jar of enough size and sterilizing it in a pressure cooker, then plugging it once it cools. I could probably get it to colonize right in the jar.
Would I even need to go through that trouble of sterlilization if the dowels are already colonized? What's the risk of contams with logs in general and how does the indoor factor affect that?
Sorry if this is a duplicate post I just wasn't really sure what to search in the threads and honestly assumed no one would've done this as there are a thousand better ways to skin this cat. It's just an experiment I'd like to try, as I think conches on trees are the prettiest mushrooms and it'd be cool to recreate that indoors. Thanks in advance for any help.

You can grow them on sterilized substrate as most do. May not suggest hollowing out the log and filling it with spawn and then plugging the hole? Seems to me that a solid piece of wood would take forever to colonize.

Well I did projections and it seems like it shouldn't take too long. If a 3 foot (36 in) long log with the same diameter as my log takes 6 months to a year to fully colonize and begin its fruiting process, and we average that to about 9 months, then it will take a 36 in log 270 days to colonize. So 36" over 270 days = 3" over x  days works out to 22 and change days. I know that's not exactly precise but it's a good way to get a loose estimate and with that info it seems right on par with any other slow grow. The yield will probably be really low but it'd be worth it for the experience. I really like the idea of hollowing out a log though. I hadn't thought of that. Even if my idea is viable yours is way more effective and will probably yield my desired results just as well. But still I am curious as to whether my method would work or if there is something that would prevent it from flushing. On a side not how do wood-lovers fruit anyhow? The log is never really totally consumed by the mycellium as cakes are when it begins fruiting. Do they push through holes in the outer layers of the wood and bark?

A freshly fallen log would be much better - 2-4 weeks after being cut - before a bunch of spores have a chance to germinate and start colonizing the log naturally, leaving less for your inoculated species to be able to colonize and will have to fight it out with other fungi for nutrients.

No need to sterilize or pasteurize on a log - though one that size it may not be too difficult to pasteurize if you really wanted to. But you definitely dont want to sterilize it -without being able to keep it sterile while your introduced species takes over - it would be a breeding ground for everything floating around you.

Seems like you've done a bit of research, yes dowels are the way I would go. Af far as hydration, I've read a few varying techniques - but I think an overnight soak should suffice - just be sure to keep up the watering on it.

Totally capable of fruiting indoors, most people dont with logs due to their size and the fungi's Fresh Air Exchange requirements it just makes more sense to do outside, with no need to build a fruiting chamber for them.

Get familiar with the Search Function on this site. Search Posts, enter your key words and check the "Trusted Cultivator" tab to ensure you are getting accurate information - or once you become familiar with certain users you can search by post author as well - there are many brilliant mycologists on these boards that dont have a TC Tag like MrCloudy for Reishi.

However I must say - one of the great things about Reishi for we mycologists is if you spawn colonized grain to sawdust bags - you can fruit them invitro (inside the bag) with no need for a fruiting chamber at all (just be sure they get plenty of light). This will cause them to "Antler" all the way up to the top of the bag.

I actually just ordered a freshly cut piece of oak. I figured if I could go with the most natural route I should. I'm gonna give it a week or so for the fungicides to start to break down and then soak it. Thanks for all the links and the warm welcome:sun: I'm really excited to be here.
