"there was no way to prevent the attacks from occurring absent massive and prolonged violations of liberty" - pinksharkmark I have to say, this is one of the more asinine statements I've read around here lately.

what about a 'maybe' option?
-------------------- The above is an extract from my fictional novel, "The random postings of Edame". In the beginning was the word. And man could not handle the word, and the hearing of the word, and he asked God to take away his ears so that he might live in peace without having to hear words which might upset his equinamity or corrupt the unblemished purity of his conscience. And God, hearing this desperate plea from His creation, wrinkled His mighty brow for a moment and then leaned down toward man, beckoning that he should come close so as to hear all that was about to be revealed to him. "Fuck you," He whispered, and frowned upon the pathetic supplicant before retreating to His heavens.

Massive and prolonged violations of liberty is obviously horseshit but whether it could've been prevented or not is unknown until we get the full story of what Bush and the boys really knew. If the intelligence services had been paying as much attention to al-qaeda as they were to making up fantasies about Iraqi WMD the odds of a successful attack would be very low.

We might have prevented 9/11 if our president and his administration had not so blatantly ignored terrorism until then.

I think paying attention to field agents and foreign agencies, propagating information throughout the system and heeding the escalating violence against US targets over the past 10 years could have done wonders for prevention.
not to say it's a definitive answer, but it's pretty clear that all the information was out there, just in disparate systems and languishing within our beauracracy.
government is overfunded and still failing in its duties to us as it's citizens.

I'm gonna say yes, but I don't think all the blame should be placed on Bush. If the question was "Could the Bush administration have prevented 9/11" I probably would have said no.

I could think of plenty of ways that the attacks could have been prevented without "massive and prolonged violations of liberty". pinky's statement implies security can only come at the cost of liberty - the kind of thinking that's used to justify the patriot act.

Dude as much as I hate to say it, we needed somthing like 9/11 to make us pay attention. Before there was simply no interest in it. The biggest thing they were worrying about before was missle defence.
