Hi... I’m am a very confused newbie and this is my first post. I visited this forum many times and finally signed up today. I’m in western Washington and have about an acre of newly (November 2017) planted grass. To clarify, though it is relatively new, what I have is not a luscious well-manicured lawn but rather a rough looking grassy terrain heavily interspersed with weeds and frequented by rabbits, deer, etc.

Over the last few weeks I’ve been seeing a lot of LBMs popping all over this grassy area and also on adjacent to it strip of mulch where we have some ornamental plants growing. The little guys look like Panaeolus species to me. However, even though the spore prints are black, I’m not at all convinced they are subbs. I’m not even convinced they are pans. The caps are about 10 mm in diameter (average) and reddish brown but quickly fade to light tan when dry.

They have very thin (about 2mm) brownish stems that’s hollow. The stems are too thin to see any lines. The stem breaks if I bend it, but does not exactly snap in half, in other words, I have to use my nails to sever those fibrils (which hopefully, would eliminate Psathyrella). Interestingly, yesterday I found about 6 similar looking shrooms, but on the mulched area, and they had slightly thicker and lighter (in color) stems, almost whitish. Unfortunately, all of those guys were immature, though I did get a black spore print from the largest one. I have the thin and thick stemmed guys on the same pic for comparison (if I ever figure out how to post and upload pics.)

All spore prints are black, including the thick stemmed ones. Any comments will be greatly appreciated. Can those be anything other than pans? I had some Coprinus species earlier but those had very striated and transcluscent caps. Thank you for your input!
