Mold question. Need advice quick if possible :/

First grow.  BRF cakes in 1/4 pint jars and one 1/2 pint jar.

Am cooking CV (no Gypsum) mix now as I post this.  PLan to shred and spawn to bulk CV in shoeboxes.

Just birthed the cakes.  Had a few .5 to 2 inch pins in some jars.  The 1/2 pint jar was the slowest to colonize, but got a big pin faster.  It had some fluffy white mold at the top.  The rest looks healthy.  See pic.

Should I shred this into my bulk too?  I could try to fruit it in a bag now and skip shredding this one, or just toss it in the compost.  What sayeth the gurus?

It could be mycelium but does look sort of mold-ish... I had some myc peeking through the top verm layer on most of the jars I did a few months ago.  In your pics it has a grayish look.  If it is gray, then it's probably mold.  If so, I'd birth them and slice off a half inch or however much needed to get rid of it, then rinse the cake off and dunk/roll and hope for no more mold.

There appears to be some around the inside edge.  Is it stemming off the white mycelium below on the cake, or an obvious different substance?  If it's pure white and connected to the mycelium then that's probably what it is.

The gray may be lighting, it looked white to me.  It was hard to see if connected, but I had some myc growing into verm and some knots/pins right at the top.  I have rinsed it now so it is impossible to tell.  I think I am gonna slice the top off like you said.

The only question then is whether to shred with the rest of the cakes or fruit separately.

Decided to leave that one out of the bulk.  The rest are shredded, shoeboxed and cased.  This one is getting dunked overnight and I will make a small fruiting chamber with a shoebox and some perlite tomorrow.  I will case it and fruit it separate just to see what it does.

What does it smell like? Thats the best way to tell sometimes. I have Myc that comes through the top of my jars sometimes, but it is usually rhizomatic and very white, not fluffy. Clean myc just smells like mushrooms...maybe a little funky sometimes, but it shouldn't smell sweet, sour, or distinctly moldy/earthy.

Also, something definitely went wrong if they are pinning. Once mycellium begins to fruit, it doesn't easily go back to the colonization phase. Those are two completely different life stages for this organism. I would say these cakes are not a good candidate for bulk sub at all. If anything, I would dunk them in water overnight and put them in a SGFC to see if they produce any more fruit.

If you want to do bulk sub, I suggest starting another round of BRF cakes or grain. When I want to get something done quick, I inoculate my 1/4 pint jars in two places and they are often fully colonized in two weeks.

Whatever you choose, let us know! Growing gets easier with time, and every failed attempt is a step in learning what not to do =)

Why not err on the side of caution?  I dont think it's wise to put anything but spawn you are 100% comfortable with in a mono tub.  One bad one could completely ruin the tub.

Thanks all.  There was no off smell that I could detect.  Smelled like the other cakes, earthy/shroomy.

I think it was just more myc growing through the verm.  This jar was a bit stressed though.  It was larger and took a little longer to colonize and stalled.  After reading, the fact that they had pins does not look to be an issue for shredding to bulk.  There were only a few small pins in all the jars and only two larger ones.

If this goes well, the next thing for me is to get good prints and practice agar and making LC.  Then I will go grain to bulk, either shoeboxes or monotub.
